THE MASKED DEVIL (Maskeli Seytan) (Turkey, 1971)

More psychotronic goodies from the world of Turkish pop cinema! MASKELI SEYTAN (which I assume means The Masked Devil) is from 1971 and directed by Yilmaz Atadeniz (who also did THE DEATHLESS DEVIL (DVD from MM) and SPY SMASHER (from Onar). This one comes courtesy of Ciko. Check out the trailer, it's pretty awesome not least the end where the baddies are attacked by... a MUMMY!! o_O

  2. Turkey, it is what is for cine-dinner. Will this country ever run out of bizarre films for fanatics to track down and treasure? I think not...

  3. JACK,I've got this one on vcd.The title means The Masked Devil. From memory, he's sort of like a cross between the Phantom and Zorro who has a female sidekick. This has an unbelievable nude chase scene at the start, with a bunch of bad guys chasing a very sexy naked tall brunette though the turkish countryside. The masked devil character also has a second comedic cowboy sidekick called Red Kit,similar to Copperhead's bone-head Sherlock Holmes buddy, Bitik from the Deathless Devil movie.Nice flick if you dig all those Yilmaz Atadeniz superhero movies.

  4. JACK !!! here are some questions for Turkish cult. Are the subtitles on the DVDRs optional or ingrained onto the film ?? Does he exclude turkish buyers who live overseas too ??
Is the quality on the DVDRs better than the quality on the official vcds ??

    ReplyDelete
  5. 'shame about that film that never got made.It might've put turkish cult flicks on the map instead of those arty films that win awards.

actually, it would've been somewhere in between cult&art.

'What was the basic storyline without giving too much away ?'

an international film crew awaiting money visits archaeologist in eastern turkey and strangeness ensues; a supernatural travelogue?
    hard to explain but strange.
I kept getting warnings about no nudity or swears in script (cause one of the main backers was a member of opus dei). at no point was there ever nudity (unfortunately) or swearing in the script. a character saying 'bust my ass' (as in working very hard) got changed to 'crack my back' in spain... oh the horror...

'THe vinyl release of TUr.frkout will have an exact repro of an okay temiz 45 as a bonus.Okay"s stuff is mostly hit and miss but he has some good grooves that deserve to be reissued, like for example the Zikir album.'
great album & it is (or at least was available here on CD).I like a lot of what he did in '60s & in scandinavia in '70s.

Anonymous, it was suppose to be 2 films: 3 dev adam or superman in istanbul.

'How about switching to the deathless devil thread ?'
    here I am.

  6. Brian; yeah it's rare. Most of these films are. Have you checked my post about TURKISH STRAW DOGS? You'd probably like that one.

David; No, Turkey will never run out of bizarre films from the past. LOL.

Tombei; Thanks for the info. And to answer your questions:

    - The subs are optional.

    - I haven't asked Gokay but I'm 100% sure he doesn't exclude Turkish buyers who live overseas. He doesn't hold a grudge against Turks (would be rather weird if he did as he's Turkish himself, LOL). I am sure he doesn't sell to buyers in Turkey cos he doesn't wanna get into copyright problems. Needless to say his dvd-r's are bootlegs.

    - Well, he tries to better the picture quality. For instance with KIZILMASKE he changed the squished fullscreen format on the VCD to letterbox on the DVD-R and I'm pretty sure he made it look less dark. But it's limited how much he can improve the prints as he only uses VCD and VHS prints. No real film prints.

  7. Xanthor !!! somewhere between cult and art.Good combination.Who or what is opus dei??
Yep okay is alright with me.He's got a lot of scandinavian stuff on the sonet label.I picked up one of his records for 50 cents at an Op shop, the one with the painting of a naked polynesian woman on the cover.Didn't enjoy this record that much but i'm still keeping it because it sells for about 80 - 120 dollars on ebay. That trt break muzik lp he's got sounds interesting Too, as well as those early jazz fusion records with various musicians.THe don cherry album called Ankara or live in Ankara that Temiz plays on has been reissued a couple of times in the recent past.Don't know if it's any good but it's an early Turkish jazz record because Cherry is backed by an all turkish band.

  8. XANTHOR !!! Two separate movies .I must've misread your message.THe band in 3 Dev Adam to me looks like the yilkut tezcan 5.not too sure but i have a similar looking group in another film who did definitely play a Yilkut Tezcan 5 instro in a night club belly dance scene .Yilkut tezcan 5 plays oryantal or belly dancing music with garage group instruments ie a farfisa organ sound similar to the seeds or '?' and the Mysterians but with a definite oriental slant.

  9. Jack !!! Thanks for the info on those ciko(roll) releases.I will buy some stuff off him as soon as I can afford to.

  11. I'm sure that'll make Gokay & Co. very happy, Tombei. xD. Btw, was there some confusion over 3 DEV ADAM and the Turkish Superman movie? They're definitely different films. Superman isn't even in 3 DEV ADAM (but evil Spider-man, Cap. America and El Santo are, LOL).

    ReplyDelete
  12. Jack,no I just misread his message ,also he didn't put a 3 in front of Dev Adam,I think it was a hash(LOL)symbol instead. If my memory serves me right,he's talking about one of the other superman flicks called Superman Istanbul'da where "supey" has phantom head gear on and a girl sidekick. There's a trailer for this flick on one of the early Onar dvds. There's also another flick called Dev Adam (minus the 3) but I think it's a spy/crime movie ? Look it up in your Funk and wagnall's... OOOPs !! I meant giovanni and metin's Fantastik Turk Sinemasi book.HEHEHE

  13. Anonymous: sorry for not responding to yr comments but I didn't receive notification. And they've been giving me grief about my password.

'Who or what is opus dei??'
Opus Dei is about 100yr old extreme right wing of catholic church; kinda of a christian AlQuaida-they don't plant bombs but they are more subversive.

    okay's sonet stuff is excellent.

'That trt break muzik lp he's got sounds interesting Too'
    I don't think I know this one.

'THe don cherry album called Ankara or live in Ankara that Temiz plays on has been reissued a couple of times in the recent past.Don't know if it's any good'
I don't have this at the moment but wish I did. this was my 1st exposure to Okay and I like it very much. I bought a vinyl copy 40 yrs ago.

'THe band in 3 Dev Adam to me looks like the yilkut tezcan 5.'

did they ever release an album? I have (or had) some 45s that were pretty good. unfortunately, I on't have a turntable. I use to have a bellydance album from the early '70s with great psych guitar. but the album was stolen; luckily I have some of the tracks on a CDr.

JackJ: I think Ciko has permission for the Cetin Inanc films, thus not boots.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I don't think Yilkut Tezcan 5released an LP ? mainly 45s and EPs.Some of there records were also released in yugoslavia and perhaps bulgaria.Don't own any of their records.I've only heard their music from song samples off ebay and from an early 70s movie.Maybe the guitar oriental band you're referring to is Kupa Dortlusu (The Four of Hearts). They've got a fake live lp on diskotur(mid 70s) and they backed many singers in the 1960s and early 70s.

    ReplyDelete
  15. xanthor !! by the way the bonus 45 for the Turkish Freakout comp is an Arif Sag one,not an Okay Temiz 45.I've ordered the cd and the double lp for this title as well as the omar khorshid lp on sublime frequencies from my record store here.

    ReplyDelete
  16. 'I don't think Yilkut Tezcan 5released an LP ?'

    too bad

'Maybe the guitar oriental band you're referring to is Kupa Dortlusu (The Four of Hearts).'
definitely not.(BTW: that friend who released all those CDrs 12 yrs ago, made me a CDr of lots of their stuff cause I liked Kupa)).
no, the group I'm refering to was a traditional belly dance band that had a psychedelic guitar player in the band and much better than Kupa.

Anonymous: let me know what you think of Turkish Freakout after you get it.

JackJ: I just read yr blog bio and noticed that James Ellroy is a favorite. 25 years ago, a friend of mine (actually a childhood friend of my mother's) and a friend of his took me out to dinner in Boston's Chinatown. afterward, they came over to my apt. and he told me lots of hilarious stories about his time in WWII. then we started talking about films and books. I pulled out THE BLACK DAHLIA and told him he had to read it as Ellroy was so good. He Said: "When I was in Hollywood in the 40's" (which I had never known about--he was obsessed with Hollywood and worked very minor parts--the highpoint when he played a gypsy sitting at a campfire in a Marlena Dietrich film--and in later life was known as one of the leading authorities on Better Davis) "Elizabeth (the dahlia) was one of my closest friends. I was with her in a bar the night before she died." I was dumbfounded and I told him he had to write about his time spent with her but he told me that he couldn't: he'd never told anyone before and his family and my parents did not know and he still didn't want them to know. He told me some more but I could never convince him to write it down.

  17. I'll let you know what I think of the Tr. Frkout album when I get it.It might take a while since it's on pre-order and will be released at the end of this month.Could that trad oyun hava/oryantal band be the umit aksu orkestrasi or perhaps husnu ozkartal. These two mentioned bands/orkestrasilar use fuzz guitar, funky bass lines and keyboards on some of their recordings. There are other bands too kimbunlar(not the 90s band),Ritm 68,Various studio groups that have attila ozdemiroglu, timur selcuk, onno tunc, zafer dilek, yurdaer dogulu, suheyl denizci, arif sag, et al invovlement. It would be great if someone who had all these records were to go through and catalogue all the best recordings by all these bands on all those generic instrumental, bellydance, oyun havasi records. There probably is a lot more choice cuts that haven't been discovered yet ??

    ReplyDelete
  18. 'Could that trad oyun hava/oryantal band be the umit aksu orkestrasi or perhaps husnu ozkartal.'
definitely not umit aksu. for the other I'd have to see the cover again.

    'Ritm 68'
    I heard and didn't like.

'It would be great if someone who had all these records were to go through and catalogue all the best recordings by all these bands on all those generic instrumental, bellydance, oyun havasi records. There probably is a lot more choice cuts that haven't been discovered yet ??

I agree completely. my Psychedelic Bellydance CDr has a lot of cool stuff-- some never heard before and unlikely to ever again: stuff from turkey,Lebanon,USA; from albums and 45s (there are lots of incredible 45s from the 60s&70s out there that have yet to be discovered); some of the turkish stuff was from a tape I bought in '77 that didn't even list the artist's name and he's the best saz player I've ever heard.

have you ever heard MARS 2000?

    ReplyDelete
  19. xanthor !! yes i've heard of Merih 2000.I've got both sides of that single as an mp3.The ebay seller who had it gave away both sides as a download.the record still managed to sell for about $120-140 dollars a few years ago. Latitude Zero has a clip on you tube.In regards to Ritm 68,the early recordings by them without Riza Silahlipoda are much better. As you know a lot of the best turkish recordings are on 45s not just on lps.A couple of years ago on ebay a turkish female folk single sold for nearly $300usd to someone in russia,i've got a partial download of it but the seller didn't give away the name of the artist. What was remarkable about the single was that it had a heavy turkish psychedelic instrumental backing. Also someone from Australia won a near mint copy of the Metin Alatli Sentetik Oyun Havalari lp on ebay for $530 usd about a 2 months ago.I wonder if this person is the one that's going to bootleg the mentioned Lp ?

    ReplyDelete
  20. 'yes i've heard of Merih 2000.'
I've got the single. tried for years to find out anything about it. none of the old musicians had ever heard of it or of the band. If you listen to Pierre Henry's MESSE POUR LE TEMPS PRESENT you will find that one of the Merih 2000 songs is a direct rip off of Henry (who also released some of this as Les Ypr Sound); it is actually Henry's song. one person I knew compared the 2 and said Merih changed it a bit. the other Merih song I found on a boot comp of '70s french elektro pop. so it seems that Merih 2000 never existed - except in France. I wonder who/why decided a direct boot of these french songs.

'In regards to Ritm 68,the early recordings by them without Riza Silahlipoda are much better.'
    I never heard these.

'A couple of years ago on ebay a turkish female folk single sold for nearly $300...it had a heavy turkish psychedelic instrumental backing.'

as far as the boot of Metin Alatli Sentetik Oyun Havalari, I have no idea who is doing it.

Think I know who will be releasing that metin alatli boot ? It could be that label(World Psychedelic Classics) that recently released that Psych-Funk101 compilation with 2 turkish tracks, which are metin alatli's- Mevlana Boyle dedi & Husnu Ozkartal- Su Derenin Sulari.Check link for comp below :-

  22. XANTHOR!!! Here's the description for that recently sold m.alatli lp,the seller is suggesting that the winner could use his selling copy to reissue(bootleg)the Lp :-

Yes, this is that Turkish LP which would rather have another monkey on the cover (remember Mustafa Ozkent LP's cover?). Nowhere else would you find such weird interpretations of Turkish (or any near eastern music) caressed and ravaged with insane funky moog sounds, a stray sitar here and there and an obvious feel of budget full-ra(n)ge recording! One of the most enjoyable LPs ever to grace my ears; this is very pleasant and unserious music recorded very seriously. This already is a hugely sought after rarity .
Disclaimer : I am not trying to invite anyone to do an evil deed but if one wanted to reissue this, the copy here would be the number one choice for such an act. Mint all round, plays as if never played before (and one of the occasional very good Turkish pressings! Loud and clear with maximum surface fidelity). Immaculate. SOLD FOR $530 USD !!!!!

  31. Anonymous:I just watched (from the Toho box): MOTHRA. I tried watching it in '60s on a small B+W tv) and thought it silly. but in beautiful tohoscope color it was very nice. And for the Turkish connection: one of the main secondary characters (henchman) was a Turk: Osman Yusuf, from japan's small turkish community. If you check him out on IMDB you find that he was in lots of cool genre films, including LATITUDE ZERO.

    ReplyDelete
  32. XANTHOR!!!! when you dig deep enough, there's always a turkish connection.LOL.Did you say latitude zero, maybe it was him who made that Merih 2000 single??hahaha.
I would love to have every single one of those japanese movies ie sci-fi, monster, samurai and ninja movies from the 1950s up til the mid 1970s.

one of THE GREAT american tvseries: great writing&directing+chock full of actors who later became stars.

'thriller sounds fine and maybe one step beyond too.'
re: Thriller-- I meant the Boris Karloff one, not the english one (which I've never seen)... I use to
watch one step beyond when I was a kid-- I don't remember it being that interesting.

I don't have many aussie films in my collection but I've seen many: Don's Party & Newsfront & Outback w/gary bond)(all of which'd really like to see again) and the films that became a big deal in the US in the early '80s like jimmy blacksmith.and have seen Dead End Drive In and a film in which a friend was the music consultant-- Dogs in Space. I have Long Weekend & that doc about the '70s aussie films, which is great-- and I'd like to see these films. I remember years ago watching an aussie western starring john water that I liked very much. I was into aussie & kiwi films (and tv) cause I spent 6 very intense months traveling in europe in '77 with cool people from australia/new zealand and learned to speak aussie&could even identify where someone was from in australia.

'Did you know that in an episode of 77 sunset strip, a picture of Ataturk on a wall was used in a scene in the series?'
wow! lend me your comb, kemal...

just remembered 2 more films I wish I had: RAZORBACK (I'll never forget the TV Guide review of this: "Arguably, the greatest movie ever made about a giant man-eating hog.")
There's a current korean film on the same subject but I haven't seen.
the other film I can't remember title. in my local mom&pop video shop, I saw a sleazy cover (drawn) of a girl in a nightie on her knees on a bed. On the back were photos of the middle east-- w.t.f. I had to watch it-- it was great. lead actor looked like arnie schwartneger's little brother who fled germany cause he was a neonazi. he hooks up with a circus and screws a coworker. he wants to marry her. she says he's crazy. he pulls out a rifle and says:"If u don't marry me, I'll kill myself." she laughs and he shoots himself. she's in hospital& dr. says:"he'll die without an operation, he'll only have it if you marry him." she marries him and the fun begins; based on a true story. I'd love to see this one again(title was like 'savage...' what about romper stomper or mad max, which had to be dubbed into AMERICAN...HaHaHa...

  39. Hi xanthor,I'm no longer anonymous, just started a blog and have an identity now.the aussie stuff I like is mainly from pre-1980.Outback is called "wake in fright" here in Oz.It's just been restored and rereleased on dvd.I Don't like Russell Crowe at all.A lot of the Australian tv shows have been lost or destroyed from the 1950s and 60s.Just like they did in Turkey, the aussie stuff wasn't considered worthy and destroyed often used as landfill or if on video tape (as with the tv shows) it was recorded over.

  41. xanthor fek,

Regarding Ciko's releases of Cetin Inanc's films: Yes, they have his permission, Gokay mentioned this on Cinehound forum. But altho I'm not familiar with copyright regulations in Turkey I would have thought that that's not quite the same as their dvdr's not being bootlegs. Aren't they supposed to be a registered label? And pay taxes? And does Cetin Inanc own full rights over his films? Does the production company get any money out of this? I don't know the answers to this but I have my doubts that just because a film director gives his 'okay' it makes a dvdr legit. But again, I know close to nothing of Turkish copyright and business regulations. And needless to say, I don't mind their being bootlegs. I just don't wanna state their are legit releases if they're not. I did that on a forum a couple of years back about some Bobby Suarez films and shortly after I got an email from Suarez in the Philippines saying "they are not legit!". LOL.

This is a very contentious area: copyright as such never existed in Turkey in the '60s/'70s. how can it be retrospectively applied. even at the time Y.Atedeniz made 3 Kilink films and there were at least 8 direct ripoffs. Can he now sue these people...I know for a fact that SHOW TV (one of the largest networks here) insisted that they owned the rights to "dunya'ya kurtaran adam" merely because they owned a copy of the film.

'Aren't they supposed to be a registered label? And pay taxes?'
taxes definitely but I don't know the answers either...

'And does Cetin Inanc own full rights over his films? Does the production company get any money out of this? I don't know the answers to this.'

I don't know either.if problems do arise, I have suggested a perfectly legal and ethical solution to Gokay.

should marvel or DC sue over UC DEV ADAM?

in a related area: in music, very few songs/artists had their songs copyrighted... In america, europe, most of the world, if you want to do a cover version, all you have to do is do it as long as you provide writing&publishing credit (unless you substantially change or parody the song- then you need permission).
in turkey, if you want to cover a song, you have to get permission of the songwriter&publisher and pay them whatever they demand & it can be tens or thousands of $. a friend produced an album recently and they were asked to pay 100,000 TL for one song. luckily, the writer's wife heard the new version, loved it, and the payment was decreased to 10,000TL. How can something that didn't have copyright, suddenly become copyrighted?
the answer is to record yr favorite old turkish tunes in another country.

The Batman 60s TV series; I have the complete series as a bootleg box from the US. In contradiction to all the old boots of the series this is NOT off a TV broadcast but taken from real studio masters!! Rumour is it was Burt Ward who needed the money. I have no way of knowing if that's true but it sure is a fun story. The DVDs look good. Not remastered of course but at least not like 3rd generation dupes with snippets of ad-breaks in them.

And I agree there's tons of stuff from Japan and Turkey but to me there's stiff heaps of stuff to be found in the US. At the moment a ton of old Roger Corman films are finally being released on DVD and there's still a ton of old horror movies (not least from the 70s) that aren't on DVD.

Also other "unusual" regions like Indonesia and the Philippines have made lots of interesting genre films. Both those countries had similar film productions to Turkey: lots of stuff in the 60s & 70s and then a breakdown of the whole industry.

  47. xanthor fek,

I knew Turkey was like a wild-west in the 70s but that they didn't have film copyrights as such, THAT I didn't know. Gee! Well, in that case I guess Gokay doesn't really have anything to fear. And I don't know if you've noticed this on his eBay pages but he actually states you can't buy from his eBay store if you live within Turkey.

  48. "should marvel or DC sue over UC DEV ADAM?"

I'm sure they would if these movies were made in Europe or anywhere else but I'm sure they reckon it's a losing game to start off with lawsuits in Turkey. LOL.

Btw, it (fortunately) seems like Onar is flying under the radar with their 3 DEV ADAM DVD! I mean it contains appearances from Spider-man, Capt. America, and El Santo. That's infringing on TWO other countries copyrights. xD.

  51. xanthor fek,

Your learning about speaking "Aussie" brings back memories; When I moved away from home I moved to London and checked into a no star cheap hotel. Everyone there was friendly so I figured I'd soon perfect an English (British) accent. Little did I know that the hotel was located close to Earl's Court which at the time was known as "Kangaroo Valley" (and still is I think) as that were most Aussies and Kiwis would go and stay. Almost everyone at the hotel (the Curzon House Hotel) was from OZ or NZ so without ever having been to OZ I adapted and Aussie accent. Haha. Later I got to live there.

Yes, RAZORBACK is great and it's easy to get on DVD. I have a good letterboxed release from the UK.

Did they dub ROMPER STOMPER into "American" or was that just MAD MAX? I must admit I find that whole thing both ridiculous and hilarious. LOL. The new DVD release of MAD MAX has both audio tracks but the Aussie one is included as an "extra" feature which is just as ridiculous. It obviously should be the other way round.

film, book, or music copyrights --nada. My oldest friend had a hit song in England in '78. it was released in Turkey with a pic sleeve
    and it's a bootleg.

"I guess Gokay doesn't really have anything to fear.'

I hope this is true but I don't know-- this is turkey after all. Turkey has retroactively copyrighted stuff despite the fact that so much of the pop culture of the '60s/'70s was out and out stolen from the west. I don't think these retroactive copyrights would be legal in civilized countries.

I think Onar & Ciko are too small for the large american companies to deal with... hmm, but isn't there a spiderman character in another turk film that predates the marvel spider thing?

'I agree there's tons of stuff from Japan and Turkey but to me there's stiff heaps of stuff to be found in the US.'
I wish I could afford lots of the jap stuff from '60s/'70s I want; and
    that old US stuff.
I wish I could afford the THRILLER, I saw 2 episodes when I was a kid and loved them. I wish they'd release WAY OUT (Roald Dahl '62(?), which at the time was the most heavily censored show on tv-- cause it was so scary.

'Your learning about speaking "Aussie" brings back memories'

in '77, I mostly lived in Earls Court (Hunter's Inn&Hunter's Lodge) til I moved to Herringay (a turkish neighborhood.

    'RAZORBACK is great.'
    I want to get this

'Did they dub ROMPER STOMPER into "American" or was that just MAD MAX? I must admit I find that whole thing both ridiculous and hilarious.'

it was dumb and hilarious (though I wish many films from scotland and ireland were subbed in english-- fuckin' incomprehensible--someone should teach these people how to speak english).
ROMPER STOMPER never got a theatrical release (as far as I know)and it was after the deluge of aussie films of the '80s, so companies probably figured that americans were use to aussie accents by that time.

  56. I've just watched 4 turkish films:
ALTIN COCUK: very nice. Some egregious continuity errors but a cool villain. The Divan Hotel where Golden Boy stayed near taxim is where my parents stayed when they visited me with friends of theirs (including the dahlia's friend) 12 years ago-- a very nice hotel; but the hotel is long gone-- soon to be a car dealership. you can see how beautiful Istanbul use to be in this film before it was overrun with anatolian riff-raff who over built the city, going from a pop. of 1.5 million to 17 million. I hope that Onar puts out Golden Boy in Beirut, which I watched yrs ago and liked very much...
    and from Ciko:
ACI PIRINC: very good&enjoyable film about migrant workers in the rice fields with Erol Tas as the dasterdly villain. Recommended.
KIZILMASKE: terrible directing, horrible acting, idiotic script-- this film sucks in every and all ways.
SON OF BATTAL GAZI: Ciko's newest release is wonderful: excellent direction, script, and acting and Cuneyat Arkin at his sommersalting best. Get this!

JackJ: re: our discussion about turkish copyright-- Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer books were so popular here, that there were about 450 Mike Haymer books written & published in '50s-'70s. And some are considered to be very good. How many did Spillane write? a measly 15 or so?

Hi There Xanthor,I'm too lazy to sign in.LOL.Golden boy is a pretty good flick.I've watched it about 4 times so far.I've also watched another film that would've been great if it wasn't faded,Erkek ve Disi starring fikret hakan and selda alkor.avoid buying this dvd cos it's like watching ghosts in the fog.more than two thirds of the movie is unwatchable.Don't they have quality control at Fanatik Video ??I also like watching old movies with Istanbul as the setting.Topkapi,From Russia with Love and That Man IN Istanbul and the old turkish movies are great examples.I was there about 8 years ago and went to all the cool places ie topkapi palace,Dolmabahce Saray,Blue Mosque,Yera batan basillica cistern, aya sofya mosque/church/museum,the grand bazaar and on a ferry cruise just past the suspension bridge and back and many other places I can't recall offhand.however I didn't go to the record/collector stores and the newer part of town because i was with my 67 year old dad.

same here but haven't seen That Man IN Istanbul. have us seen fury from the orient?

'I was there about 8 years ago... however I didn't go to the record/collector stores'
most of these are long gone.

'in regards to over dubbing on mad max. That's silly! Is the australian accent really that hard to understand?'
not hard to understand; and it was silly. however, I think overdubbing films of england, ireland, scotland would frequently be a good idea as some of their accents are incomprehensible. once after a jonathan richman concert, 3 fans from Derry,N.Ireland were talking to me and Jonathan-- one talked to me for 20 minutes and I understood 0 words (I just nodded and went hmm). When I saw the film MYNAME IS JOE, for the 1st 20 minutes, the only words I identifiable as english were swears:fuck, shit, etc.

  62. TINTIN AND THE MYSTERY OF THE GOLDEN FLEECE
    Synopsis

This first-ever live-action Tintin film was famously set in Istanbul, Turkey, and is considered by many 'tintinologists' to be one of the best Tintin films ever produced. Memorably played by Jean-Pierre Talbot, Tintin teams up with his dog Snowy to help their friend Captain Haddock (Charles Wilson) travel to Istanbul to collect an inheritance, a ship called the Golden Fleece. An old rust-bucket, the ship's seemingly worthless cargo draws the attention of a devious businessman, forcing our heroes to sail to Greece to escape his evil clutches. The comedy is driven by Captain Haddock, dotty Professor Calculus and the hapless Thompson Twins, all uncanny lookalikes of the originals. Like Tintin, these characters appear to have walked off the pages of the classic Herge comic. Combining stunning cinematography in exotic locales with excellent action sequences, The Mystery of the Golden Fleece is a must-see for Tintin fans.

  63. 'TINTIN AND THE MYSTERY OF THE GOLDEN FLEECE'
    this sounds interesting...
a friend's doing a thesis on how outsiders view Turkey in film, so at the film fest they showed a bunch of films (some even shot here, such as 5 Fingers(James Mason) and robbie-grillet The Immortal (fantastic). I have 5 fingers but haven't watched yet...a silent film called The Virgin of Stambul gave everyone a good laugh. I remember watching an episode of a late '70s tv show set in Istanbul, which looked more like a moroccan souk.

'btw I've got that horrible quality dvd of Manco's sole movie!! I'm going to get the vcd.'
If I remember correctly, the main problem was the horrible sound; no sound problem on vcd...Baris has been particularly ill served by re-releases: the Bin Bilirim album on CD was mediocre (I don't know if they fixed this) while the tape was far superior. when they rereleased '2023' they dubbed it from scratchy vinyl. the CDr copy I got from my friends's shop 10 yrs ago was far superior.
I might have asked before: Have you seen SOLDIER OF FORTUNE shot in Turkey 40 yrs ago (Chuck Bronson & T.Curtis) with Fikret Hakan & lots of other familiar faces from old turk films. produced&directed by
    R.Corman's brother. Cool film.

  66. The record companies who have had or own the rights to release Baris Manco's catalogue are basically hacks who don't care about his music and are spoiling his reputation by releasing inferior quality merchandise.Ben bilirim, I think has been released 2 or 3 times.Hopefully the latest release with the "nick the chopper" period photo on the cover is an improvement on the earlier release/s.That Turkish 2023 cd reissue is awful in all respects, ie. bad cover, wrong songs, poor quality sound. It's actually compilation not a straight reissue. It's been reissued twice so far on cd and vinyl outside of Turkey. On turkuola germany and GDR, i think in spain.

I'm not sure what film the HN cover is from. In my mind I knew what I wanted and had been looking for 4 years but hadn't found it. One day in his shop I asked Metin if he could help and I described what I was looking for. he gave me a 5th generation photocopy that was the ideal pic but I wasn't sure if it could be used, but the people in LA who designed the album graphics from the materials I supplied did an amazing job.

  72. Regarding Indo & Filipino films:

Well, yes I have a lot of films from those two countries but I haven't only specialised in those two places. Out of the more "exotic" countries (or unknown to the broader public if you will) I also collect films from HK and Turkey, and old horror movies from Bollywood & Mexico. I also watch and collect horror and cult movies from the shall we say more well known markets in the west, the US and Italy but of course that's not terribly interesting (as a novelty) as such as everybody else does that as well.

Have I got DVDs from the Philippines and Indonesia? Noooo, they don't exist! LOL. 99% of all my Filipino stuff is on VHS and my Indo stuff is on VCD from Malaysia or (if I'm lucky) on English dubbed VHS from Greece or Japan.

Mondo Macabro have put out a few Indo films but good DVD releases are few and far between. For instance, MM put out THE WARRIOR (aka Jaka Sembung). There are four sequels, none of them are on DVD and only two of them are on dubbed VHS. The last two are only on VCD in Indonesian.

  73. "Has Ciko withdrawn from sale the masked devil vcd/dvdr ??"

I don't know! Is it gone from the store? Well, if it is they (he) probably have. There's been other films in the past that he took off the site and I must admit I don't quite understand why, I mean it's not like they go OOP since he burns them himself. But maybe the reason is he doesn't have any more of the REAL vcd's left that he would enclose with the subtitled dvdr. Personally, I think he just ought to sell the dvdr without the vcd if he hasn't got any left.

HOWEVER, a possibility could also be that he's withdrawn the disc until Xanthor fek has remastered the subs. Hmm, actually I think that could very well be the reason.

In the event it's not coming back up I can easily make you a copy of my dvdr.

450 Mike Hammer books! Jesus!! That's a lot! Yeah, he only wrote a measly number of 15 himself, LOL. That would normally be quite a few but obviously nothing compared to 450!!!

You're not a fan of KIZILMASKE I take it, haha. No, it's not high art or anything but I like it cos it's a fun cartoon'ish Turkish film adaptation of the comic book.

Bill Barounis did mention some of the films he's bought the rights for but I forget which ones. A "secret" Kilink film as far as I remember and I thiiink also another Golden Boy film. But I'm not sure.

  76. About accents:

No, Tombei/Joe mazuki, the Aussie accent isn't hard to understand. It's just lazy Americans from the southern states who would probably even complain over Canadian accents, haha. Aussie English doesn't have "weird" dialects like the British or Irish do. And yes, I agree with xanthor fek; they ought to learn to speak proper English, haha. It took me three viewings to finally grasp what they say in DEAD MAN'S SHOES (great film!).

I don't agree that some Irish and Scottish films should be dubbed but they ought to be subtitled that's for sure. LMAO.

  77. TINTIN AND THE MYSTERY OF THE GOLDEN FLEECE! I've got this on DVD (from Sweden)! They made two Tintin films in the 60s with real actors. The other one is "Tintin and the Blue Oranges", which I also have (it's also on DVD in OZ).

About Turkish/international film productions: I have a film called REVENGE OF THE GODFATHER (aka Babanin Arkadasi). It stars Richard Harrison and it exists in both an International version and a Turkish one. The one I have is the international one on a US VHS. Unfortunately I haven't been able to get the other tape (I'm gonna make a dvdr swap with Ayman Kole and I'll ask him for it). Have any of you seen the film?

  78. 'A "secret" Kilink film as far as I remember and I think also another Golden Boy film.'
I hope its 'In Beirut,' which I've watched on tape. Isn't he also doing that strange film with the 'caspar the ghost' character.

Yrs ago I watched Tarzan in Istanbul & Tarzan the Fearless and was bored by the former and loved the latter. just watched the former with english subs, which didn't change my opinion of the film. I think Bill's original plan was to release them together on one DVD. I wish that had happened. Did you watch this? like?

I've only got 2 DVDs of Filipino films: Darla, which is pretty good, and a western, which is pretty bad.

about Ciko: 'But maybe the reason is he doesn't have any more of the REAL vcd's.'
    this is the reason.

'he just ought to sell the dvdr without the vcd.'

I agree and I don't really see the point of including the original.

'HOWEVER, a possibility could also be that he's withdrawn the disc until Xanthor has remastered the subs. Hmm, actually I think that could very well be the reason.'
no, it's not. it's strictly a matter of having originals to include. I will be editing subs for some of the previous releases but not sure if I'm up for doing all of them. I just spent 8-10 hrs working on the newest release and that was for a fun film with okay subs to start & that I watched at least 6 times. with 25 releases, that would be a minimum of 250+ hrs. (the thought of trying to watch Kizilmaske 6 times fills me with dread)...BTW: I'd started on new subs for Masked Satan, but put it aside to work on the new film & Ciko are VERY happy with the new subs.I'll probably go back to MS.

I'll be taking a short break from Turkish films to watch REVOLUTION SUMMER, which was produced by my oldest friend, who also did the music, as he sent me the DVD&the soundtrack CD.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I watched TARZAN IN ISTANBUL when it came out and well, let me put it this say; I'm fond of obscure films so that way I liked it. But it's not great film making by anybody's standards and I still haven't felt an urge to watch it again.

I suspect the reason Gokay encloses VCDs and re-printed lobbycards is because I made a racket and complained about his prices! LOL.

I see some of his dvd-r's are a bit cheaper now but when he started out all of them were around $22 incl. postage which I thought was way too much for a dvdr. Other fans tend to disagree with me. I mean he doesn't even bother to make a cover like most other bootleggers do. Now, that's fine and all, a printed cover isn't necessary but I thought $22 is too much for a plain dvdr and like I said I suspect he started to enclose other "gifts" to satisfy customers.

    ReplyDelete

I know that turkey has (or had) the most expensive postage in the world. and I know some US sites sell for $20+postage, inc. one that takes 2months+ to SEND OUT orders & doesn't respond to emails.

'I mean he doesn't even bother to make a cover.'
    I have 4-- 2 with cover & 2 without.

'I suspect he started to enclose other "gifts" to satisfy customers.'

  82. I hope I didn't sound too negative or like an old man with back pains, LOL. I really like Gokay and he's a really nice guy. And yes, many (most) bootleggers in the US charge 20 dollars for a bootleg, but still, at the time (when Ciko opened) I felt it was too expensive probably cos I saw him as a fellow fan & collector, not as a bootlegger. And yes, maybe his prices are fair enough (that's a far as you get me to say "ahm, alright you're right", haha).

    ReplyDelete
  83. 'many (most) bootleggers in the US charge 20 dollars for a bootleg'
These are not bootlegs. we have this wonderful law that says that any film that has never been released in the US or has been released in a different version, can LEGALLY be released in the US.
In fact, I think that this law has been very beneficial: Many films that might have been forgotten or even worse lost, have been saved from oblivion; moreover, it has created an audience that more 'legit' DVD companies have availed themselves of. and when most of these one-man gray market companies find that bigger companies are releasing DVDs of these films (with permission) they remove them from their catalog...Onar & Ciko are labors of love and they aren't raking in big bucks; and probably not making any money at all.

re: copyright: I know that Onar has paid for the rights to films, but in many cases these films were ripoffs to begin with. if copyright never existed in turkey, how can they exist for these films, albums, etc. now, blah blah blah.
In turkey, much of this type of material is not released UNTIL IT HAS BEEN RELEASED ELSEWHERE: there is no appreciation of the past here.

just watched Onar's SUPERMAN film: it's ok. one thing that struck me as strange is that one of turkey's key villians, Turgut Özatay (who was in 350 films, which may be a record for Turkish Cinema, usually in 'tough bad guy' roles), is in the film for all of 10 seconds in a very minor role... about a year after I moved here, a friend lent me a 90 min. tape of the good bits that were cut out of turkish sex films after the military coup. I watched it one day and saw Özatay humping some actress; then I went to my local supermarket where I saw him old and frail struggling to push a cart thru the aisles-- we did our shopping at the same market.

    ReplyDelete
  84. just watched SUPERMEN DONUYOR- it's okay, but DEMIR YUMRUK, DEVLER GELIYOR is a lot of fun; Tunc Basaran is an excellent director; and good script and acting. for the most part, I was very impressed by the music that they stole with my favorite being Davey Allen and the Arrows' "Blues Theme." also, some cool psychedelic music I wish I could place.
aside from borrowing from the most popular films of the day, many turk films in the '70s used music from 2 albums: MANDINGO & DUKES OF BURLINGAME (sp?); perhaps also The Hell Preachers.
also watched YARASA ADAM (BATMAN) from Ciko and discoved that the dvd I had of the film for a number of years was missing the 1st 7 minutes of the film; however, my copy has the original trailer.
also just listened to the soundtrack CD of REVOLUTION SUMMER, which is excellent and something different for Jonathan Richman fans.

I basically agree, though I love the turkish star wars.

'It seems the worse the film is, the better they like it.'

    true

The yilmaz atadeniz ones are way cooler.I'm going to buy the onar superman double for the superior second on the bill flick.

atadeniz is mre intersting and the 2nd film w/ superman is excllent.

  91. one of you recently asked how Cuneyt Arkin was doing nowadays since he's in a current credit card commercial and looks fine. However, he is apparently having physical problems with his vertabrae and other stuff, maybe do to his years of film work.

  92. Xanthor !! the copy I had of the man who saves the world was in very bad shape and it was very dark in picture quality.I had to put the brightness setting on 100% just to barely see the picture.I guess it's good to own because arkin and aytekin are in it.Some scenes in it are alright but it's a good example of how not to make a movie.Maybe if I had a good quality version of it and gave it a second chance I might enjoy it a little bit more ?

  93. I have a perfect (and English subtitled) copy of Turkish Star Wars (The Man Who...) and it's really only a movie you can enjoy if you like trashy movies. Now, it should come as no surprise that I am HIGHLY entertained by bad movies but I think it would be slightly, eh, foolish to try and make you believe this is a good movie. Because it's not. Entertaining? Yes. Good? No.

  94. Tombei, I'll comment on your other posts later.

PS: The Swedish Tintin DVDs are really good looking. Letterboxed and great picture. Only Swedish subs though, no English.

definitely. and get it with subs.I don't know who is selling it on ebay, but a bunch of sites have it with subs for as much as $20+ or as little as $12.

JackJ: this is a masterpiece of turkish cinema!

  97. No, that's no the version I have. Mine has the same well known cover from the Turkish DVD. But it may very well be the same subs and print they've used. That's often how bootlegs work. I also have a subbed bootleg DVD of Turkish Star Trek.

  98. JACK!!!
I have Turist Omer Uzay Yolunda aka Turkish star trek on vcd. Originally saw that in the late 80s on a rental vhs tape.I didn't think much of it then but I can see it's cult merits now. It's pretty funny in a humorous turkish way.The music is mainly from the Ventures in outer space LP which I have on vinyl.

  100. Anonymous: turkish freakout looks ok, but where's the 'freakout.' I'm familiar with most of the tracks.

BTW: have been searching for that Odeon Cagdas reissue but so far haven't found it in any shops...

  101. XANTHOR !!! Yep that odeon cd is easier to find on ebay and online than it is in Turkiye.I asked someone from there to get it for me but they couldn't find it!! Also the cd doesn't give any credit to Husnu Ozkartal and his orchestra. From the reissue cover it looks just like another no frills folk dance cd but the title of the album is still the same,CAGDAS OYUN HAVALARI(modern folk dance tunes).Odeon doesn't even advertise this cd on their site.
