English subbed trailer for the Danish teen horror film BODY SWITCH (aka Farligt Venskab, Denmark 1995). From a rare Ocean Shores dvd (i.e. from Hong Kong).

The People Who Own the Dark (Spain, 1976)
I finally watched León Klimovsky's THE PEOPLE WHO OWN THE DARK last night. I'd kept off buying the Code Red DVD till the very last minute and, like, 7 seconds after I clicked the "buy now" button the DVD was sold out. Right on time I'd say. Som på et kussehår, haha. A group of upper-class deadbeats have gone to the countryside to revel in a weekend of sexual depravity and pigsty behaviour. But before anyone can say oink a nuclear bomb of some sort goes off and everyone else is hit by the blast - but not our main characters as they were oinking around in the basement.
Too bad for the survivors the people hit by nuclear blast weren't killed like in the old days but are blinded and become revengeful killer zombies. Or some such. When I watched the film I remember thinking, "Hmm, this being a Spanish horror movie I bet it's gonna end in a bad way". I wasn't disappointed. Read Fred's review here if you must know more.
trailer:
If you've bought into the whole grindhouse style thang you're gonna love Code Red's print as it's an old beat up 35mm print which is scratched beyond belief. Heaps of frames are missing everywhere. The audio track is hissing away. An entire bird shooting scene is missing at the beginning. It's easy to know what's missing as Bill Olsen was so nice as to include the old NTSC VHS version in the extras (not just a few scenes mind you but the entire film).
The VHS version looks good enough to watch (I plan on watching that version at the re-visit), the picture is fullscreen (the 35mm presentation is letterboxed) but the tape master was sourced from an unscratched print. There's no other extras apart from a few trailers. No Spanish audio, only the English dub. Highly recommended.
EDIT: How could I forget to mention El Hombre Lobo, Paul Naschy, is in the film as well!!

Danish psychotronica
This is the trailer for Ole Bornedal's original Danish version of NATTEVAGTEN (aka Nightwatch) from 1994. He later remade it in the US (also entitled NIGHTWATCH). I haven't watched it for a few yrs but I remember it as being pretty good (altho some of the dialogue is pretty embarrassing, argh).

The vampire countess is dead.
I first saw Ingrid Pitt in THE VAMPIRE LOVERS on a double bill at the old Scala Cinema Club in London sometime in the late '80s. Right after I went out and bought COUNTESS DRACULA on video. And now she's gone. :(
Ingrid Pitt RIP.

Magdalena, Possessed by the Devil (1974)
aka Beyond the Darkness /The Devil's Female
Original title: Magdalena, vom Teufel Besessen

I watched the German THE EXORCIST ripoff MAGDALENA, VOM TEUFEL BESESSEN tonight. It was the second time I watched the film; the first time was about 7 or 8 months ago and the version I watched back then was the English dubbed print under the title THE DEVIL'S FEMALE.
Tonight I watched the original German language version and to my surprise there were a few differences! I originally just bought the German version (on VHS, the film hasn't been released officially on DVD anywhere, although there is at least one factory pressed reg. 1 bootleg DVD of the English dubbed version, which btw comes with RUBY, the blaxpoitation EXORCIST ripoff!!). However, I noticed that the English dubbed version is engulfed in a green light through out the entire movie! The German tape has the colours look normal. I bet the green was boosted to make it look more like the evil bedroom scene in THE EXORCIST! But when you compare the two versions the green light version just looks annoying!
And also, I noticed at least one nude scene in the dubbed version that had been toned down (i.e. alternative footage has been used, so when you read about a bootlegger offering an "uncut" version of the English dubbed print, pffft to that!!). I'll make a proper comparison at some stage. I also noticed an entire scene with a dog that was missing from the dubbed print!
Anyway, the film as such is awesome! It's both quite scary and it is by far the most sleazy EXORCIST ripoff there is! Whereas the possessed girl in the original film is an under-age girl the girl in this German ripoff is a teenage girl who spends half of the film being possessed - in the nude! And doing fornication movements with an invisible demon! xD!! If the bloody IMDb is right the actress who plays the teenage girl, Dagmar Hedrich, was actually around 40 y.o. when she did the film! She doesn't look 40 though. Anyway, MAGDALENA, POSSESSED BY THE DEVIL is highly recommended! Here's a handful of screen grabs from the German tape.
[intro text card from the German tape]
[from the English dubbed tape]
[title card in the German version]
[crappy title card in the English dubbed version. I doubt the dubbed print was originally released this way which makes me suspect the original English title wasn't The Devil's Female but probably a direct translation of the German title, "Magdalena, Possessed by the Devil"]

[notice the green "glow" in the English dubbed print]

The Crazies remake
I went to a big indoor second hand market in Melbourne around... well, early 1990s anyway, and some guy was selling all his video tapes. I had a look and picked one; Romero's original THE CRAZIES (aka Code Name Trixie). I asked the guy why he was selling his cool tapes to which he replied that he and his brother had way too many tapes, they simply haaad to get rid of some of them. "We have a big bookshelf with tapes like that one at home " he said and pointed to a bookshelf that was about half the size of any of my bookshelves, haha. Oh well, I got THE CRAZIES and I still have that ol'e Aussie tape in perfect condition. I always liked the film, it's not Romero's best but I definitely like it more than what many other fans do. So is this remake gonna be a bastard from Hell? No idea but in contradiction to quite a few of my fellow posters on Dvdmaniacs I quite like the trailer. So should you. xD

The Evil Dead, an all-nighter 22 years ago, and wanting Steve C. to come back

Ahh, what a night. Apart from my (then) girlfriend being annoyed (you could actually feel the temperature going down in the cinema) about my bringing her to see a film with "that" scene in it (the tree rape scene, you know) it was a night to remember. And FILMS to remember. Three of them were BIG classics to remember (and Hellraiser 2 is a guilty pleasure, lol).
I was living in London at the time and my entire film foundation was laid by going to all those all-nighters during those years in the late 80s/early 90s. As I'm sure you're aware, no matter where on the globe you're located, that the UK had very strict censorship regulations in those days (or "censorshit" as IN THE FLESH would refer to it). They've loosened up quite a bit although the BBFC still ban a movie once in a while.
The good thing about going to the old Scala Cinema Club was exactly that: It was a cinema club! There was a loophole in the censorship regulations that allowed clubs with members to show films that were otherwise cut on video tape or had to be shown cut in ordinary cinemas (all you had to do to become a member was buy a member's card that cost ya 50p and which was valid for a whole year and you were even allowed to bring a friend, LOL).
THE EVIL DEAD had been cut (about a minute) when it came out on rental tape (even though it was a pre-certification tape, i.e. before the British Board of Classification [BBFC] was introduced). So in other words, the version I got to watch on that cold and rainy dark night was a fully uncut version. Of course nowadays nobody cares about these old stories as you can buy your fully uncut EVIL DEAD DVDs in every video store on the corner in every city no matter where you are.
A couple of years later I discovered a Bristol based fanzine called IN THE FLESH run by a guy called Steve C. (who still owes me for an entire year of subscription!!!) and in their 7th issue Steve C. reviewed the film in their "A-Z OF NASTIES" and amongst other things he wrote: "Gore-wise the original Palace version was missing approximately 1 minutes worth of pencil twisting, eye gouging fun and frolics [...] I strongly advise you to look out for this everywhere. Even though there is now a version on sell-thru the original Palace release is head, shoulders and a few minutes gore above that!"
... and now, about 20 yrs after I read that piece I'm finally gonna get a copy of that legendary tape! Woo-hoo!! I won it on eBay last night and I must admit I can't wait. I know I know, don't tell me, it's not as good as a DVD or a blueinyourface-ray or whatever you kids buy nowadays but none of that new fancy stuff is gonna have the history this one has (or the damp smell of having been sitting in someone's basement for 20 odd yrs, probably). Sure it's cut but... HISTORY, man, HISTORY!!!
And if nothing else... it IS presented in its original format WHEREAS almost all of the DVD versions are presented in the wrong format as Sam Raimi caved in to the DVD companies and re-cut the film's format so now the top and bottom are missing from the film!! I'm not even fucking kidding! Did you really think a film shot on 16mm would be letterboxed? Well, it's not. It's fullscreen and that's the only way to watch THE EVIL DEAD. LOL (don't worry, if you've got the wrong version you can still get a proper one without having to find an old video tape as there's a release that contains both the original fullscreen and the crappy lbx version. Go check Dvdcompare.net).
But having said all of this I must admit I somehow miss the old days of trying to hunt down banned video nasties and reading splatter-movie fanzines. No, my friend, reading someones blog that has the same bloody layout as 17 trillion other blogs just isn't as fun, boo-hoo. Steve C. where are you now? We need you to put out one more issue. :-(

Deep Blood (1989)

I watched Joe D'Amato's JAWS ripoff DEEP BLOOD (original title: Sangue Negli Abissi, Czech title: Bestie Z Hlubin) yesterday and I must say it's not the world's goriest nor most scary shark movie, haha. However, it was alright. If you want lots of shark attack scenes then, well then you'll get mighty disappointed as there's a lot of stuff going on land but less (much less) happening on the sea. Someone mentioned that the film almost has a plot! (in some grotesque Bizarro World version of the Batman 1960s TV show an enthusiastic narrator utters frantically WHAT IS THIS?? ... A PLOT?? IN AN ITALIAN JAWS RIPOFF??? CAN IT REALLY BE?????? Haha.
The DVD I watched is from the Czech Republic and apparently it's the only DVD relase there is. It's fullscreen but even so the picture looks alright. The DVD is released by the Ritka Video label which also was the first company to put out Bruno Mattei's last two zombie movies, ZOMBIE ISLAND & ZOMBIE: THE BEGINNING, anywhere in the world! They've also put out Franco E. Prosperi's WILD BEASTS, unfortunately only with Czech and French dubbing. Recently I was lucky and got hold of the English dubbed NTSC tape in good condition. I got the Czech DVDs from this store (they don't take PayPal, only banktransfer).
Unfortunately I couldn't find a trailer for DEEP BLOOD on YouTube so instead here's the trailer for Bruno Mattei's CRUEL JAWS which uses scenes stolen from DEEP BLOOD anyway, LOL (and from The Last Shark, Jaws, and Jaws 2!!!).

"Men trur jeg kan med handen på hjerte si at det er den groveste filmen fra skandinavia i historien"

Med hagla i handa og hora i panna!
Awesome! This is a new Norwegian splatter movie entitled HORA [whore] which is being released on DVD from Another World Entertainment in February of next year. I have no idea whether the movie is any good or not (feel free to send me a review copy, boys! xD) but the Scandinavian output of gore flicks is so small (read: non-existent) that just the fact that someone decides to make something like this makes it worthwhile.
According to AWE's website the film won the main prize at some film festival in Holland called But earlier this year. Also according to their website this is going to be a Norway only release (!!) I wrote to AWE and asked them about a possible release in Denmark or if fans would be able to order the Norwegian DVD from AWE or Absurd-online (kinda AWE shop) but now three weeks later I still haven't received an answer.
Anyhoo, in a thread on the Norwegian horror movie message board Skrekkfilm.com the director of HORA, Reinert Kiil uttered the line quoted in the headline that basically says he believes the film to be the nastiest film in Scandinavian film history. Let's wait and see if it can live up to that but it certainly sounds good!
Here's a teaser trailer:
I'd also just like to say hello to my latest follower; Raquel Crusoé from Brazil. Miss Crusoé is a famous pianist and I had a look at her blog and, eh, I have no idea what interest she would have in my crappy blog about messed up pop-culture. I thought of the possibility that someone else might have added her profile but I believe you can only do that yourself. Oh well, welcome Raquel in any case.

...then the terror is taken to a new level as the rotting cadaver of Raja makes its presence felt in the most traumatizing manner...
Not everything I buy film wise is on old deleted VHS. No, really, I mean it! (haha). Here's two DVDs filled with Bollywood horror movies that I ordered the day before yesterday; First up is Do Gaz Zameen ke Neeche (trans: Two Yards Underground) directed by that crazy Ramsay family. This is their first horror movie, it's from 1972, and actually I've had it for quite some time, however my old version is an un-subtitled video-cd from India. I'm excited about this new DVD as, yes my hairy friends, it does feature English subtitles. Yay. Spiffy!

Omar Khan (who directed the Mondo Macabro produced HELL'S GROUND) reviewed the film (my headline is from his review) and amongst other things he said:
Read his full review here. Being the moron that I am I have never read any of his Bollywood or Lollywood reviews before altho I've known about his and his brother's overly über spiffy site for quite a while. I'm certainly gonna make a change of that! His review is very funny and informative. He's a good writer... and he and his bro owns an ice cream parlor that is all about horror flicks! How cool is that. You can check out their site here. And do read their background story, it's a fascinating read. I wish more people knew about this.
- And my other new Bollywood horror DVD contains no less than three films; 7 SAAL BAAD, SHAITANI DRACULA, CHEEKH INDIAN (unfortunately all unsubbed):

Omar Khan (who directed the Mondo Macabro produced HELL'S GROUND) reviewed the film (my headline is from his review) and amongst other things he said:
This early 70’s effort by the Ramsay family is considered to be a major breakthrough in South Asian horror. Not only did it score a huge Box office bulls eye but it also paved the way for a new wave of horror that veered away from the genteel white sari-clad ghostly figures of yesteryear to the more gory, blood curdling post-Hammer style that was to become the hallmark of local terror in times to come. The Ramsay's had long been ardent fans of the macabre and especially of the films turned out by the Hammer Studio’s in England. It doesn’t take too long watching a Ramsay film to begin to realize just how much of an influence the Hammer style has been on them.

DEVIL TIMES FIVE (1974)

I watched the film on an NTSC video tape. I received the tape yesterday and the eBay seller I bought it from stated the cover was "in good condition".

DEVIL TIMES FIVE is also out on a widescreen reg. 1 DVD but the tape is open matte and it looks just fine! Anyhoo, no matter your format of preference just get it. You'll thank me for it later. xD

The Night God Screamed (1971)

I watched THE NIGHT GOD SCREAMED last night and what a terrific horror movie this is. Truly creepy. Unfortunately, it's not released on DVD so you'll have to find an old video tape (or get a dvdr from someone). Filed either in the "Invasion" section or "Manson inspired" section. :D
Thanks to Caspar Vang of Uncut.dk for selling a huge part of his collection which means I'm now the happy owner of THE NIGHT GOD SCREAMED on Danish ex-rental. The scan comes courtesy of Diabolik.

Dark & Nasty HK: THE RAPE AFTER (1983)
Here it is, boys and girls; The mother of all dark and nasty horror movies from Hongkong from the 1980s: THE RAPE AFTER (original title: Yin Zhong)!!!

(click scan for proper size)
Okay, maybe I'm overdoing it slightly here but as they say in oldskool kung fu movie dubs: "But still!". LOL.
Anyway, courtesy of Peter80 from Cinehound here's the rare HK VHS cover from Ocean Shores. And no need to ask; No, I don't have this tape myself. And yes I cry myself to sleep every night because of it.
:-(
I do however have the Japanese tape with in two ways is superior to this tape: 1) it's uncut. The HK tape is slightly cut. And 2) it's letterboxed. The HK VHS is fullscreen. HOWEVER, the HK tape (and LD & VCD) is subtitled in English. It's unfortunate that Japan has never been a British crown colony as they don't feel the need to subtitle their films in English. :/
Thanks to Peter for the scan!
EDIT (21/7/09): I forgot I actually also have a really good full size scan of the the VCD release of the film so here it is!

(click scans for full size)
Big thank you's fly out to Stephen Gladwin for providing me with the HK VCD scan. Cheers mate!
WEIRD ASIA
Weird Asia was thee coolest website for weird and crazy films from Asia! It was run by my mate Günter Müller (in Austria) but it is unfortunately long gone. However, one of his reviews that I still have is incidentally for THE RAPE AFTER so without any further ado let me just say... take it away, Günter my much missed friend:

THE RAPE AFTER (minor spoilers)
Director: Tom Lau Moon-Tong
Cast: Melvin Wong Gam San, Chang Hing Yue, Chun Wai Man, Ha Pin, Wong Yat Fei, Chan Yau Hau, Hung Law Bat...
Hong Kong 1983
Running Time: 91 min.
aka YIN ZHONG aka YAM CHUNG
Translation of the original title: 'Licentious Seed' or 'Lewd Seed'
The story is a bit complicated, so I reduce it to the most important things. Shu Ya, a young model, gets involved with photographer Mo Hsieh Sheng , who stole a strange statue from a temple. He takes her home to take advantage of her, but both get very drunk and fall asleep. In the night, a demon (seems he emerged from the statue) appears and rapes the young woman in her sleep. The photographer falls in love with another woman (Li Ting Ting, who is the daughter of the master of the temple from where he has stolen the statue). In the meantime, the model learns that she is pregnant. Mo takes her to a dubious doctor who performs abortions. But during the abortion, a storm with thunder and lightning turns up, and the abortion is seriously disturbed. Shu Ya decides to keep the baby, and Mo takes her to the hospital. On the ride there, the two begin a dispute about the future of the baby, and a fatal accident happens. Mo survives, but Shu Ya burns alive in the car wreck. She promises revenge. "You'll pay for what you've done!" Later in the morgue, an autopsy is carried out on the horribly burnt corpse, when suddenly (after cutting open the womb) hands snatch at the doctor and pull his face into the guts. In the ensuing struggle his head comes off. A slimy baby is seen crawling away from the corpse, tearing out the umbilical cord. Later, very strange and terrible things happen around Mo, his girlfriend Li and the master. Mo, with the help of some priests, tries to find out the cause of the strange happenings and fights back.
THE RAPE AFTER is an excellent but sadly almost unknown horror classic from Hong Kong. Made in 1983 by Tom Lau Moon-Tong (his only movie as director), THE RAPE AFTER mixes various influences to a highly effective brew.
The story seems to be straightforward, but you are wrong thinking that. There are a few subplots involving the mother and the retarded brother of Shu Ya, as well as the family of Li Ting Ting and her father, the master. Most of this stuff happens in the first half of the movie, making the structure of the plot a bit slow and complicated, but after the baby is "born", the action never eases up.
This movie is without a doubt one of the best and goriest horror movies made in Hong Kong in the 1980s. An undisputed classic of horror cinema if you ask me. There is absolutely no comedy in between the proceedings (which often is the case in Hong Kong movies), making this a very dark and disturbing film. I really go as far as to say that THE RAPE AFTER is equal to European horror classics from Fulci and Argento. Even zombies make a fine appearance in this excellent film.
Right from the beginning, the film has a dark and threatening atmosphere. Until the rape by the demon (which has more the feeling of love-making; there is no struggle and the woman responds to the demon's touches) there are no supernatural elements, but in spite of this, the movie is dark and depressing. There are sad scenes with the deformed brother, or long shots of the stinking and rats-infested room where Shu Ya's mother lives. The director takes his time to tell the story, showing many details in the depressing life of the model. After the rape, or more exactly, after the fatal accident, the film takes a completely different turn and becomes a revenge spectacle like you have never seen one before. Well maybe you've seen one: SEEDING OF A GHOST (1983) is even more bizarre and gory. What makes it even more shocking is the fact that the revenge is warrantable. The man (Ho) is not directly responsible for the happenings. Sure, he stole the statue and unknowingly frees the demon, but the impregnation and the accident are not directly his fault.
The second half of the movie is awesome. You can't deny a European feeling to the action. There are many wonderful setpieces, in which terrible things happen. Dario Argento's SUSPIRIA or Lucio Fulci's THE BEYOND come to mind when seeing the second half of THE RAPE AFTER. One of the best setpieces I've ever seen involves a priest in a dark room, who is attacked by rats and birds. This is filmed very effectively from the opposite direction to the light, so an eerie look with creepy shadows is created. Then some birds fly through a torch, catch fire and attack the priest, turning him into a living human torch. This scene (and many others) has almost a surreal quality to it, is beautiful to look at and has a nightmarish feeling at the same time. But there are more setpieces like this.
There are some surprising twists and turns, as well as great shock scenes (for example the discovery of a corpse in a closet and a rat crawling out of its mouth). But in contrast with most of the new generation of horror movies (especially the teenie-slasher cycle), THE RAPE AFTER doesn't rely solely on "boo-scares" to shock and disquiet the viewer. It's the tone, the atmosphere and the story that counts!
One scene in particular reminds me on another sci/fi-horror classic. The scene in question is the examination of the hideously burned corpse of the woman, which has many similarities to the burned remains found by scientists in John Carpenter's THE THING (1982). And it also is put to great effect in this film.
Director Tom Lau Moon-Tong does not cut away at the murder scenes (he also edited the movie, by the way) and shows a few brutal and shocking killing sequences that don't need to hide from European gore classics. An axe in the head or ears being torn off are made very compentently. Apart from that the movie is very atmospheric and spooky. Most of the creepy scenes are filmed with a cold blue light that looks fantastic. The music is very eerie, unusual, and loud, creating strange noises that make your hairs stand up. And the cast is pretty good and believable too. So if you have the chance to get hold of this excellent film don't hesitate a second. You won't be disappointed!

Gory & nasty Hong Kong: THE BEASTS (Dutch cover)

(click scan for bigger size)
I have written about the HK movie THE BEASTS (aka Flesh And Bloody Terror) several times this week and I've fortunately been able to show you a scan of the cool pre-cert VHS release from the UK. However, the DVD-r I own is actually taken from the video tape released in Holland and it annoyed me greatly that I didn't have a scan of this version to post. Obviously, all I needed was to write my mate Teade (aka KingofB) in Holland and ask for a scan. :D I knew he had one cos, well, initially I got my DVD-r from him, LOL. Thanks buddy, you're the best!
I should point out I have never seen the UK tape so I can't tell you whether it's presented in fullscreen or letterbox. The Dutch tape is both uncut and letterboxed. The print carries the English dub.
PS: If you think the UK cover is heaps better I won't argue with you.
;-)

And here's a bootleg "release" of the Flesh And Bloody Terror version (or Flesh And Bloody Horror as it's re-titled here).

Drool away

No, it's certainly not the greatness or cool artwork that make these cover scans so appealing!! With the top one it's knowing that this is the only known copy of this tape! This is the Danish VHS release of LEMORA: A CHILD'S TALE OF THE SUPERNATURAL (1973) and no, unfortunately I don't own it, a collector buddy does. :(
But man, that cover!!
Here's another very rare one that I'm happy to report is sitting nicely on my shelf (the scan is of my mate's copy though); LOVE BUTCHER (1975).

EDIT: For an update go here.

Yay!!! More dark Hong Kong Horror
Oh man, it seems I'm practically stumbling over old 1980s HK horror flicks that I've been looking for for years!!! I just found (and purchased, obviously!) brand new editions (on VHS, these films have never been granted life on little shiny saucer thingies) of DEVIL SORCERY, BLOOD SORCERY (aka Curse) and HAUNTED MADAM:

EDIT (June 30th); Unfortunately no fucken "yay"!!! I just got an email from TaiSeng that says they don't sell video tapes anymore but even tho those three tapes are ON THEIR SITE and THEY ACCEPT PAYMENT they don't actually have the tapes in stock! Huh??? Actually, they have tons of video tapes for sale on their site but, well, apparently they just don't have the physical tapes! Go figure. Why the bloody hell don't them take them off the site then!!?? Anyway, as much as I'm annoyed about it I'm much more annoyed about not getting those three films as they're rare and I don't know where else to get them. Boo-hoo. I'm sure I'll find them at some bootlegger's place at some point but getting official releases sure beats getting a crappy dvd-r boot.
:( :( :(
EDIT (July 1st); I think it was our great present day philosopher Homer Simpson who said it the best: "Damn brain I thought we had a deal!" Argh, ffs! I'm doing some serious tiding up yesterday and what do I find in a pile of DVDs from Dragon Jester in Malaysia: DEVIL SORCERY!!! Argh, of course!!! When I saw that TaiSeng tape and looked up the film I'd totally forgotten that I actually found and bought the film on DVD some 8 months ago (or so). I forgot cos I never even watched the damn thing, it just went into one of the to-watch-later piles. Hahaha. Argh! I'm sure Patrick in Norway is laughing his ass off. :(
