Crazy Indonesia: Rambu.net gone!

It seems Rambu.net the only fan site dedicated to everyone's favourite Indo flick, RAMBU aka The Intruder, is gone. I can't say I'll miss them (sorry guys!) but still; sad to see someone disappear. If I don't seem too bummed out about it it's simply due to the fact that they never seemed interested in actually providing any kind of info on neither the film, the actors in the film (other than Peter O'Brian) nor the alternative version that was released in Indonesia (the Intruder version is the international edit). They didn't offer any info on Peter O'Brian's other films, nor did they have the slightest interest in wild Indo cinema as such. They did do that cool interview with Peter O'Brian but that was about it. I sincerely wish they would have done a better, more hardcore and anal fan job out of it than what they did. I'm not trying to be mean here, just honest. :-(

Anyway, the cover scan is from my video tape from Belgium. It is without a doubt thee best release of RAMBU picture-wise!! It's fully letterboxed (the Greek tape is only half lbx) and has a picture so crisp that you'll cut your fingers if you put them on the screen while the film is playing (the Greek tape has the usual soft picture that we've come to expect from Greek VHS). The only "flaw" is the French dubbing. If someone added the English dub to this tape it would be perfect and beat all other releases!

RAMBU: Forceful Impact

[VHS/Greece/fullscreen/English dub/Greek subs]

It's been a while since I last posted about Peter O'Brian and his films but tonight I'm as happy as happy can be cos I've finally won the last O'Brian film I didn't have: FORCEFUL IMPACT which (to the best of my knowledge) only exists on VHS in Greece! But it wasn't an easy win lemme tall ya that! And altho I don't know who my opponents were I have my suspicions, LOL.

Trash-online's description:
Here comes another Indonesian rarity from the producers of THE INTRUDER, and yes, more Peter O'Brian madness for your viewing pleasure! Benson (Peter O'Brian- RAMBU) takes control of a mafia family after Don Giovanni's (Mike Abbott of FINAL SCORE) demise. A mafioso's widow is desperately seeking revenge for her husband's murder- apparently the killer Benson. The plot is a mess here although there are quite a few good reasons for anybody to watch this: Cameo by Mike Abbott. Peter O'Brian constantly saying "fuck" (at least 3 of them in each of his sentences). Peter O'Brian in funny underwear taking part in a sex scene, then raping another girl. Nudity- that's something you rarely see in an Indonesian production. Over the top action with gunfights, sadistic torture and huge explosions! Lovers of Indonesian trash cinema should grab this without thinking twice! Watch FORCEFUL IMPACT and see what the O'Brian phenomenon is all about!

There's no trailer for FORCEFUL IMPACT on YouTube but my mate Lefteris has uploaded one from another Peter O'Brian film; LETHAL HUNTER (aka American Hunter). O'Brian is actually only in the film for about 3 minutes, LOL, but it's totally awesome nonetheless (he IS in the trailer!).

Chris Mitchum plays the main character in LETHAL HUNTER and here's a trailer for another over-the-top and no-holds-barred Indonesian film starring Mitchum; FINAL SCORE. Both films are VERY recommended!!!

RAMBU

It's been a bit quiet in the RAMBU camp here lately so I thought I'd better give you TWO pieces of exiting RAMBU news!! Firstly, the Peter O'Brian interview is done! Yep, though not by Ian and I but by the OTHER fanatical RAMBU fanatics (LOL) from Rambu.net. Oh, by the way, did I forget to mention the interview is ONLINE!!! So why don't you just get hold of a big cop of coffee and settle down (it's a pretty long interview). Big congrats to the Rambu.net guys!

You'll find the INTERVIEW right here.

They've also recently added a store where you can buy bootleg versions of some of the Peter O'Brian films which is cool but unfortunately they've forgotten to include any info what so ever on the versions they're selling! For instance, is THE INTRUDER the letterboxed version or an ugly fullscreen print. Is it (shock, horror) the heavily cut UK version? And the other O'Brian films; which versions are they?

Interestingly enough, it's mentioned that they don't sell THE STABILIZER and TRIPLE CROSS because they are available elsewhere. THE STABILIZER is sure enough released on dvd in the US by Troma but you should avoid that AWFULL Troma dvd at all costs!! Somehow the dimwits didn't even notice that their dvd print totally fucks up towards the end of the film. It's pretty much unwatchable and definitely very inferior to the Japanese vhs!! Anyway, I wish the Rambu.net guys luck with their site but they ought to consider putting a bit of info on their page in regards to which versions they're selling. I have no idea where TRIPLE CROSS is available. To the best of my knowledge it's never been released anywhere on dvd but is only available on OOP vhs (and DON'T get the US release as it's both heavily cut and re-dubbed!!).

By the way; Our friends at Trash-online in downtown Greece are selling a REMASTERED, uncut print of LETHAL HUNTER!!!

And there's more; Spannick from Asian Dvd Guide forum has just posted a trailer for an UNRELEASED Peter O'Brian film from 1989 entitled TIME GAME!!! It's indeed not released anywhere!!! Check the trailer here:

Yep, it looks like a DIE HARD rip-off (nothing wrong with that, LOL)!! Whether some company is gonna release this or not is of course up in the air but I'm certainly crossing my fingers!!!

RAMBU vhs covers galore

I found an alternative Swedish RAMBU vhs cover scan to the one I've already shown from Sweden.
Swedish vhs/English dub/fullscreen.
Thanks to Miltos from Cinehound in Greece. Incidentally, someone at Cinehound mentioned he'd seen a THE SNAKE QUEEN release also in this yellow series from Sweden! That's very interesting as so far the only release that was believed to exist is the Greek tape.

RAMBU SPEAKS!!!

Hey you saw my post from a couple days back, yeah? Well, things may just look a teeny weeny bit better right now so with crossed fingers let's hope for the best.

Anyway, one thing I don't wanna miss out on is letting you all know... WE HEARD FROM PETER O'BRIAN!!! Yes, it's true!!! Ian received a letter from Peter O'Brian about a fortnight ago and here is the bit that concerns Peter's career and how he got started.

Please notice this is NOT the interview we've been talking about, this is "just" a letter. We would still very much like to make an interview with O'Brian but we just need to get things organised so that we are all able to be there at the same time! I'll let you all know.

Anyway, enough from me. I proudly present to you, finally, a word from an actor who has been "lost" for so many years. A mystical figure almost. And although I have fantasised and hoped for the day when someone would be able to get in touch with him and get the lowdown on his career, or even just find out who the heck he was, I've never really believed that it would happen.

Well, it did and although all due credit must go duefully to Ian I'm happy to be a wee part of all this. So, from Ian and me, here's your Christmas present:

PETER O'BRIAN's letter to Ian F:
[reprinted with permission]
I've been out here in the wilderness(Indonesia) for twenty years man. When I first came here on a teaching English throughout Asia mission, I had a ticket to travel the world and Indonesia was my second port of call. I was scheduled to stay five days in Jakarta, but after two days here I couldn't stand it, and took a walk down to UTA ( the French Airline I had my ticket with) when I was spotted walking the streets by film scouts. At the time they were looking for a Rambo look a like and there I was. They actually thought I was Sly, poor bastards. Anyway, the next thing you know, I'm down at Ram Punjabi's film studio ( Parkit Film) doing a fight scene with this Chinese fighter.

They stopped the fight scene after several minutes, and asked me into Ram's office to sign a contract as a leading man. I never did use that world trip ticket, in fact it ended up in the bin as I forgot about it and it just expired. That is destiny Ian.

Getting back to my story, so there you go Ian, from an English teacher to a Film star at the toss of a coin. Well, I wasn't going to let anybody step on my dreams; consequently, I signed the contract but not before scamming a role for my best friend as the Gangster boss, Craig Gavin ( real name Craig Smith). At first Ram, Gobin and Damu( the Punjabi Brothers) said, 'no we do not need a gangster boss especially one who looks like a gangster', and I said well, "either you take the two of us or forget it". They told me that they'd think about and let me know the next day.

We were best buddies on a world trip at that time, so we really didn't give a rat's arse about films or anything else for that matter. The next thing, I get the call saying, " OK, we'll keep him here as your manager and who knows, maybe we might find a role for him". On balance, the good old business, Indian minded producers put him to good use as a gangster boss where he shone.

We did two films together with the Punjabi Bros, and then Craig decided to stay back in New Zealand where we come from, not The USA as is wrongly stated here and there.

After getting a taste of Indonesia and its rich culture, gorgeous women, and exotic places, I decided to stay on and do another film with The Bros. I ended up playing the bad guy in my next film, called 'Forceful Impact', which stared an American Italian guy. It was fun raping and killing and not going to jail, so all in all it was a grand experience. Besides that, I'm not naturally an evil, or should I say bad guy; consequently, it was a real challenge to take on this role as a mafia boss.

After acting in seven movies I got married to the girl of my dreams.

We lived very humble lives there for three years before coming back to Indonesia. A year after being back, I ran into Gope Samtani, who is the main Producer from Rapi films. In our discussions, he asked me to make a come back in a film called "Time Game", which is basically a copy of Die hard one, but done in an apartment building through a terrorist genre. I was the hero, and did all my own stunts which is what I always do, and always enjoy doing.

Since a young boy, I've always loved danger and constantly found myself in hospital wards with broken arms, a back injury and some pretty serious cuts. Still, my principal is, you only live once, and after all, dying is easy; it's living that is hard. I've always believed that God will give me a good day to die, and when he's fit and ready to do so. I don't like living in fear and be robbed of some exhilarating moments.

By the way, that is not my voice in any of those films. They were all dubbed unfortunately.

As this is slowly turning into a RAMBU fan club anyway (LOL) I might as well show you a couple of rare RAMBU vhs releases. Unfortunately none of them are mine.

EDIT: Woo-hoo! The Belgian vhs is mine now! According to Miltos (head honcho of Cinehound) it's more letterboxed than the Greek vhs and has better picture! YAY!

Rambu in Double Crosser!!

I watched Arizal's DOUBLE CROSSER starring Peter O'Brian tonight and... oh man, the more you watch these movies the more you shake your head in disbelief that no one puts them out on dvd! This film is just soo over the top it's unreal! There's a car chase scene where O'Brian is after some bad guys in a car (they're trying to rape some poor woman and they don't even stop even though they're being followed at break neck speed!). A big truck pulls out from nowhere blocking the street and in most films the chaser would give up. Well, not so in an Arizal movie; O'Brian's character just smashes his car through the lorry!! The entire movie has no-holds-barred scenes like that!

Rambu Vs. Cynthia Rothrock

Rats!! It's past five in the morning and I can't sleep cos of my stoopid cold! So I might as well tell you about my latest aquired Peter O'Brian films, haha. Well, actually "they" are the same film! Yesterday, I received the Indonesian Cynthia Rothrock film TRIPLE CROSS on both UK and US vhs. In this film Peter O'Brian plays (apparently) the bad guy and (obviously) Cynthia Rothrock the good guy. The UK tape contains the original edit of the film, however, the US tape is a re-edited, re-dubbed, and re-titled version called ANGEL OF FURY! Yes, weird indeed. So far I've only watched (and compared) about five minutes of the two versions but it's very obvious the US edit is quite different. Quite a bit of the dialogue scenes have been shortened and the credit sequence is completely altered.

More Rambu later...

More of the Indonesian Rambu!!

I found yet another scene from the alternative Indonesian version of RAMBU:

- but just so you don't forget who the REAL Rambo, eh, Rambu is:

- and this is probably one of thee most fantastic scenes of any film you'll ever see!!!

- And finally, last scene for today; Rambu being a real man. That's priceless dialogue. PRICELESS I tell ya!! LOL.

THE OTHER RAMBU!!!

My god!!! News practically keep coming in as we speak!!!
Yesterday, I reported how Ian F (over in NJ) by accident has found the whereabouts of Peter O'Brian and now I have discovered that there is indeed ANOTHER Rambu film over in Indonesia!! It's insane!!

When they shot the ordinary film (well, ordinary to everyone outside of Indonesia/Malaysia) Parkit Films also produced a different version for the local Indonesian market!! And here I was thinking RAMBU was already very Indonesian!! So what they did was they double filmed all the scenes with Peter O'Brian in them WITH AN INDONESIAN actor playing O'Brian's part!!!
I made the discovery as I wanted to re-read the comments to the film intro that someone posted on YouTube but instead I found what appeared to be the same intro... but wasn't. Well, I guess it is... just with the other actor in it. LOL.

Here's the intro to the original International version of RAMBU, under the title of THE INTRUDER (it's from the Greek vhs):

And here's the intro to the Indonesian version of RAMBU, under the title of PEMBALASAN RAMBU (I assume it's from the Malay VCD):

I must admit I think the Indonesian guy playing the Rambu character looks like a piece of wet cardboard compared to Peter O'Brian! He doesn't resemble Rambo in the least bit!! Wasn't that the whole point of the movie!! ha ha.

However, having said that, I would of course LOOOOOVE to watch the Indo version. Obviously, I did try and find the VCD but none of the online stores that I know of has it. I must have googled for at least a couple of hours but came up with zilch. Well, nothing except this photo from (what I think is) a Malaysian website of someone holding the Malay VCD release in his hand (a guy who is in a baaad need of having his finger nails cut, LOL):

My mate over in the States, Ian F., has found PETER O'BRIAN the star from one of the most enjoyable Info... pindo... mouth won't work... can't talk now... one of the most enjoyable INDO movies ever: RAMBU (aka The Intruder, original title: Pembalasan Rambu)!!!
