Banned in the USA

This is Warner Bros' old propaganda cartoon BUGS BUNNY NIPS THE NIPS. It was made shortly after Pearl Harbor and altho the portrayal of Japanese people is ludicrous it should be seen in the light of the time it was made. It seems the copyright owners in the US don't see it that way and it's been banned from release on DVD and TV broadcast. This YouTube upload is from a terribly worn video tape. I tried to find a better version and stumbled over another one with a much better picture quality - only, it's dubbed in an Eastern European language. It shits me to think that some dickfaces are preventing cool (and historical) pop culture from being available due to misunderstood political correctness. :/

  1. A friend of mine has these on laserdisc. On Warner's last Looney Tunes Golden Collection, an entire disc was devoted to war time cartoons. This one wasn't on there, but some of the others were just as offensive, if not more so than this one; especially HERR MEETS HARE. That one's a friggin' riot.

  2. I'm sure that laserdisc is pricey, if you can find it that is!

Btw, it seems legendary "censored eleven" are going to get an uncut DVD release soon. On Wiki it has this piece of info:

"At the New York Comic Con in October 2010, Warner Bros. confirmed that they would be releasing the Censored Eleven, completely uncut, on DVD through the Warner Archives program sometime in 2011.[6] On December 1, 2010, animation expert Jerry Beck announced on the Shokus Internet Radio call-in talk program, Stu's Show that there are plans for a general traditional retail release and not via the Warner Archives. It will be "high-class" release featuring all of the Censored Eleven and other rare cartoons restored plus some bonus materials."

  4. IIRC this cartoon is included on one of those (very) old Danish vhs cartoon collections (the ones with Superman).

  5. Mein gott! I think you're right and I'm pretty sure I've actually got that tape! I'd totally forgotten about that, LOL. Tak, Henrik.
