Island Warriors (Taiwan, 1981)

Dir: Ulysses Au Yeung-Jun

I watched ISLAND WARRIORS last night and what can I say but, woah!! It's a fun movie about an island of men-hating women who fight pirates!! I really should do a review but until I (maybe) do that you can read TarTarkas' cool review here. The screen grabs are from my Greek VHS. There is a DVD release in the US with the crappiest cover I ever saw. Apparently the picture quality isn't any better than the Greek video tape which, if nothing else, has RAD cover art!!

  1. Is that Jack Black hiding behind a beard in that final screen grab !? :) .

  2. Uhh, could be his long lost brother from when his dad travelled Asia.

  3. Have you seen the widescreen version, Jack? I reviewed that one some time back. It's under its original title of COUNTRY OF BEAUTIES and really nice picture quality. ISLAND WARRIORS used to pop up on USA Networks NIGHT FLIGHT in a truncated version which is where I first saw it around 1988.

  4. Bummer! No, I didn't see your review but will check it out right away. And no, I haven't seen the widescreen version, I only have the FS version that I took the screen grabs from. Thanks, Brian!

  5. I checked your link to Far East, do you know where the lbx print came from?

  7. Brian, I ordered the DVD from FarEastFlicks and received it today, and the print looks absolutely stunning compared to my fullscreen video!! Thanks for the tip!

  8. Hey, no problem, Jack. By the way, there was a slight glitch in John's master. It occurs near the beginning during the beach fight. The screen kind of slows down for a few seconds, but the audio is fine. Not sure if he got a new one with that glitch fixed, or not. The print is really beautiful, though. It's one of my favorite indy action flicks.

  10. Hey there, Gary,

Thanks for your tip. I ended up buying the fully letterboxed print that we talked about in the above comments. I checked FLK and they don't mention the format which usually means it's fullscreen. They always mention it when their prints are in lbx.
