Karamurat: The Sultan's Warrior (Turkey, 1973)

Ahh, check this German VHS out! It's the Turkish Cüneyt Arkin movie KARA MURAT: FATIHIN FERMANI from 1973, known in English as Karamurat: The Sultan's Warrior. Thanks to Henrik Larsen I already own Mondo Macabro's UK TV print (in Turkish w/English subs) but when I stumbled over this tape on German eBay I knew I had to have it! Now, if just I could find the German dubbed print of KARA MURAT KARA SOVALYE'YE KARSI aka Karamurat Vs. The Black Knight (not released in English) then I'd be happy!! EDIT: My info on the film on this tape is wrong in the above post!!! I got my info from the German film data base OFDb (kinda the German answer to the IMDb) but their info on the English title is incorrect!!! DER HEILIGE KRIEG isn't aka The Sultan's Warrior (Kara Murat: Fatihin fermani) as they state but it's actually KARA MURAT KARA SOVALYE'YE KARSI (aka Kara Murat vs the Black Knight). And since I already have the English dubbed TV print for SULTAN'S WARRIOR I'm not complaining. This is pretty cool.

  2. I read your entry on the cinehound forum on the Karamurat series. That film called Iki Esir (two captives or prisoners) isn't in that series. From memory it's a 1970s Turkish and Iranian (Persian if you like) co-production starring Filz Akin & Cuneyt Arkin.

  4. Haha, yeah he's definitely known as Giorgy Arkinov in Russia. xD

Thanks for the info and link, Joe. No, I didn't think it was part of the series either.

Also, Ayman forgot to add KARA MURAT KARA SOVALYEYE KARSI to the list so there's actually 7 films.

  5. I don't think I've seen any of those karamurat films. Did you have to pay big $'s or euros for that german karamurat vhs tape ??

  6. Well, it wasn't cheap! It was 40 euros but I knew it had been sitting there (on German eBay) for a couple of months and I didn't want to risk losing it. I also have KARAMURAT: MAGIC MAN on German tape but I wish I could find a copy of the old UK VHS (or even just get a dvd-r) as it's dubbed in English. I understand German fairly well but, still, I'd like the Eng. dub as well.

  7. I understand german just a little bit, mainly stuff like how to order a breadroll with sausage or a kilo of spuds or what colour is my pencil etc.haha. I've got the Raumpatrioulle Orion tv series boxed set in German without subs, it was a bit hard to follow but i could figure out basically what was going on.

  8. Heeey awesome! I've got that box too!! LOL. Arr man, those *space dances*!!

  9. yep those goofy space dancers.haha
I've got several versions of the Peter Thomas Sound Orchestra soundtrack that came out for that series. I think (but I'll have to check) that yilmaz atadeniz used one of the tracks off the Raumpatrioulle Orion soundtrack in one of the Kilink movies.

  10. It's been a while since I watched any of the Kilink movies but now that you mention it I think I do remember something about that. Hmm.

  11. Do you know of or recommend any other great German sci-fi films/shows besides the Perry Rhodan and the Raumschiff Orion series ??

  12. Hmmm, no sorry, I can't think of any right now. Lots of crime, detective and cop shows but not really sci-fi.

  14. Lucky you ! another one to add to your rare Turkish film tape collection.
The only other german sci-fi film or series that i can think of is Metropolis but there's more for sure. I might get out my sci film collectors guide and go thru it to see all the rest. The book I've got isn't comprehensive enough because it's from the early 80s.Also it only lists two turkish sci-fi entries, namely the invisible man in Istanbul and Yor. Did you see die die danger's post on flying saucers over istanbul, another lost relic found?

  15. Yes, I saw DIE DIE DANGER's post and I certainly wish I could get that film. But I'm not on that torrent site (or any torrent/DL site). :-(

YOR!! I'll be getting the original TV series version of YOR soon!!!

  16. And thanks! And I'm definitely happy about my new tape. Altho it's pretty old (I haven't checked but it's probably from the 80s) the picture quality is great!

  17. yeah !! I'm not keen on torrents either. Hopefully Flying Saucers over Istanbul might come out on dvd proper. This would've been a great title for Onar to release. It's a legendary lost movie for b-grade sci-fi and Turkish film fans.

  18. hello, Flying Saucers over Istanbul was broadcasted Turkish tv channels. It wasn't so interesting movie as a sci-fi, I can say there're lots of belly dance scenes and lot's of comedy themes during movie.

  19. Hey, thanks for the info. Well, at least those screen grabs look cool. I'm trying to get a copy as we speak. :D

  20. hello Jack and Turkish cult, I regret to say that I downloaded the movie today from a site that's not the link on die die danger's blog. I don't normally like downloading movies but I made an exception on this one. Yep the film seems like a burlesque sci-fi comedy. It's another Mars needs men type of story with a comedy duo as the starring leads. A bit like Abbott and Costello or Martin & Lewis meet Plan 9 From Outer Space at a burlesque stag party. The robots and sci-fi gadgets are very cheaply made from cardboard boxes and other odds and ends which are painted silver, including the straight man's sidekick's oversized camera. Like Turkish cult said there's plenty of belly and other forms of exotic dancing in this movie, including a lengthy split screen dance sequence performed by a Marilyn Monroe lookalike called Mirelle Monro. This film is totally wierd not something you would expect to come out of Turkey in 1955, sometimes it's a bit slow to watch but overall it's not a bad trashy B-grade sci-fi/comedy flick to waste 65 minutes on. Maybe the Invisible Man in Istanbul will be found next ???

  21. Hmm, maybe the scans are better than the film then. LOL. Anyway, I've asked someone if they can DL it for me so well see. Although I don't download films myself I have no problems with other people downloading RARE and UNAVAILABLE stuff. What I can't stand is people who DL stuff which is already out on official DVD. It shits me when people DL rips of films that for instance Onar or Mondo Macabro have put out, knowing fully well that they're indie companies trying to survive on a tiny budget.

  22. I don't like people downloading stuff that's available on dvd officially either. Actually this is the first time i've downloaded a movie, if you don't count you-tube type clips.
Maybe my review came across as a bit negative but the film is still worth having. Remember that just less than a month ago it was a lost piece of film history. The belly dancing sequences, the cardboard robots and science gadgets, the maidens from mars with laser pistols etc are all a bit of fun. There's also an ugly women's night club who hire attractive female dancers including the Marilyn Monroe clone to lure men for the old ugly bags to marry. They get competition from the prettier martian women who are also after earth men. The comedic duo, I forget their names are a pair of bumbling reporters trying to get the scoop on the flying saucers landing in Istanbul. The straight man is like a Turkish Bud Abbott and the sidekick is like a slow witted stuttering Jerry Lewis type, who carries a giant cardboard camera around his neck throughout most of the movie. The flying saucer affects are really cheap and funny too. Haha

  23. Joe, if you feel negative about a movie then that's what I'd expect you to write. :D

But I just still want to watch the movie cos I want to jugde it by myself and my taste may not be the same as yours. And also even if I DID think it's a silly film it's also an obscure film due to its having been lost so for that reason alone I would want to watch it. :-)
