Bruce is a many splendoured thing

Note: This post was originally only about the Bruceploitation book but if you wanna read about TURKISH PSYCHEDELIC MUSIC and beyond then go to the comments section!

Whoo-hoo! There's a book on Bruceploitaion on its way!! How truly awesome is that - well, if you're a fan of exploitation cinema anyway (and that would be me, LOL). There's no final release date nor price yet. It's listed on Amazon UK for pre-order but according to the two authors (based in the UK) neither the date nor price mentioned on Amazon is correct. It'll probably be cheaper and get released sooner.

  1. Nice one! Thanks for the heads up, Jack. Always looking for good books about obscure cult cinema.

  2. Awesome. I just picked up the Grindhouse Experience Bruceploitation set and The Clones of Bruce Lee, so the timing on this is perfect. Thanks for the info!

  3. Is the great Nihat Yigit(pronounced nee-hut yee-it) mentioned in it at all? I'm not buying the book if he's not in it.hahaha

  4. You're welcome. If you guys prefer colour pix then you might wanna pick up the book as soon as it comes out as only the first small print run is going to be in full colour. The second run will be all b/w. I have all my info from the guys behind the book who write about it in the thread on Kung Fu Cinema forum. So far it seems the price will be around £25 for the colour edition and £15 for the b/w.

  5. So is Nihat Yigit, in it or not ? Leaving him out would be like forgetting to put Serdar Kebapcilar in a Rambo clones book !!!!! LOL

He eats kebabs and drinks lemonade and when life hands him lemons,he fucks their shit up.Hahahahaha
    THHHOOOOMPPP !!!!!

  8. Arr man! A book on Turkish remakes/ripoffs!!! How cool would that be!!! xD

    ReplyDelete
  9. I agree a book like that would be cool to own.I don't know if there's enough interest out there for a book on turkish remake/rip off/parody movies?? I've been collecting a lot of turkish vcds for the past few years.I've got more than a hundred so far without subtitles.I also buy turkish language vcds of hollywood movies like james bond flicks, jaws, rebel without a cause, westerns etc.

    ReplyDelete
  10. BTW I beleive there's a turkish language(?) vcd of the Batman 1966 movie with adam west.It was available for a short time on tulumba but was deleted within a few months.I missed out on that one.

  12. You've got over a hundred Turkish VCDs! Wauw, very cool! Do you get them mainly from Tulumba? I think the only time I ordered from there was Metin Demirhan's book.

I checked your link. The Batman film in Turkish! Cool.

  14. There are still about ten or so vcds that you might be interested in from that store, mainly Cuneyt Arkin ones.He had a lot more before but his list has dwindled down since then because I bought most of the cool ones .lol

  15. LOL. I've bought a few DVDs from this store:

    http://stores.ebay.com/Turkeywood-Movie-and-Music-Store

They don't have too much but once in a while they do have cool stuff. And here's the Turkish Cult guys who sell subtitled dvdr's:

    http://stores.ebay.com/turkishcult

The subs are pretty bad but still better than no subs.

  16. I tried turkeywood once.He listed that metin erksan film A time to love (sevmek zamani) but he couldn't get it in because it was deleted.Yep, turkish cult i need a few from him.I might get some off him in the future. There's also a couple of stores in germany but they use media mail/land brief(?), once i ordered from one of them and it took nearly 10 weeks to get the parcel.

  17. Yeah well, sometimes their info and stuff is a little raggedyedge: at one point I bought the DRACULA ISTANDBUL'DA DVD and it was listed as having subs. Well, it didn't. But I got the disc and that's important enough. :D

I believe Turkish Cult is two guys and one of them, Gokay, is on Cinehound. They also have a whole bunch of blogs about Turkish cinema, one of which is in English (but not updated very often though).

  18. Yes, I've got that Dracula in Istanbul dvd.I think that's a rare one now.An English subbed version should've been put out by now. This film is a historically important horror film. The sound and the picture needs to be fixed up a bit though.I thought maybe onar or MM would've put it out.It actually wasn't a low budget film.It had a high budget when compared to other Turkish films of the time.I think that the story about the film crew lying on their backs puffing cigars for smoke fx has been overused to cheapen this film in a lot of reviews. It's almost as good as a Val Lewton flick like say I walked with a zombie.

  20. The Dracula in Istanbul dvd was a very limited edition. It may be reissued again. A friend was going to suggest to the releaser that subs be added. I'll have to ask him if he has mentioned it to the guy again and if so what the reaction was,

  22. Hello xanthor,No i don't have the DOA edmund o'brien vcd. Some of those james cagney and bogart and other 40s flicks are on turkish dubbed vcd too.I'm looking forward to that drakula in istanbul dvd you mentioned with subs when or if it it comes out.Thanks.

  23. Ramblings: For old turkish films, sometimes the vcd is a better buy than the dvd: Baris Manco ('70s rock great) made one film. the vcd is fine, the dvd of same is a waste; strangely enough, I once picked up a cassette and a cd of Ben Billirim, one of his great albums for Mike Stax of Ugly Things magazine and asked him to compare. He agreed with me that the cassette had better quality sound... About 10 yrs ago, I saw a film at the annual festival here called MRS SALKIND'S DIAMONDS, which took place during WWII-- the only period of time in 500 years when Jews were ill-treated in Turkey (confiscatory tax laws). I asked the producer of the DVD why it didn't have subs (which it had at the fest) and he said the films producers just didn't care...BTW: the vcd of DOA had lousy, washed-out pic quality.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yep, baris manco i dig him a lot too,i've got all the vinyl reissues so far, as well as most of the cassettes & cds that have been available since the early 90s.I've only got the dvd of that lone film he (Baris) made.thanks for the heads up on the vcd.I collect turkish psych, anadolu pop, girl pop singers, belly dance records etc . As well as classical, folk and some arabesk music too.Mike stax from ugly things i've got some of his UT magazines,as well as some of his records from the 80s with the crawdaddys and the tell tale hearts.

  25. I like the following turkish artists,baris manco, mavi isiklar,erkin koray,mogollar,orhan gencebay,yurdaer dogulu,apaslar,ersen,siluetler,metin alatli,early edip akbayram,bulent,kamuran akkor,zafer dilek,murat ses, etc etc.There's too many to name.

  26. I sometimes review for UT; and when Mike was doing his major articles about the '60s scene in Calif.'s inland empire managed to track down a turkish single that one of the major guitar players played on in the '60s...those 2 bands of his were cool...Baris's film is terrible but some great music and different than other versions. I have the poster for this film... the latest issue of local magazine BABYLON has an article (in turkish) about the old psych scene with fantastic photos, most of which came from my archive. The cover is amazing-- a B+W shot of mavi isiklar in concert in the '60s. BTW when MI reformed 10 years ago, they were great!

  27. I know or have met mavi isiklar, erkin koray, mogollar, orhan gencebay, apaslar, ersen, (metin alatli has been dead for years but I hope to interview his wife soon), murat ses, and many more... have you heard HAVA NARGHILE, which I did for bacchus archives 9 years ago?... drummer for mogollar died last week... erkin koray just signed to Sublime Frequencies... I noticed you didn't mention SELDA, who was royally ripped off by the bootleggers at finders keepers... did u ever hear ZeN- best turkish band in the '90s and one of best bands in the world-- I was their manager.

  28. I just talked to my friend. the drakula in istanbul DVD wasn't a limited edition that sold out; it was withdrawn from the market. he will talk to the man who put it out to find out what happenned. If it does get reissued with english subs a great bonus would be a very long interview with one of the stars of the film, Bulent Oran, who went on to be the most prolific turkish screenwriter with over 1000 films to his credit. one of my favorites by him is Yasak sokaklar (forbidden streets '65), which is described as the turkish west side story (and he also wrote GOLDEN BOY (Onar). this interview was put onto the vhs tape that a friend made me of drakula back in the early '90s.

  29. Heaps of cool info in those last 10 posts there!! xD.

xanthor fek, you've been collecting Turkish stuff for a long time, ay? I'm curious now; just who are you? LOL. How long have you collected Turkish films (and music)? Are you "just" a western fan or are you Turkish? (I sure would have liked to understand the lingo that's for sure).

    ReplyDelete
  30. Have any of you seen SOME LIKE IT VIOLENT (direted by kemal horuglu), which is a B+W late '60s 'roughie'?
well worth searching out. I saw it years ago (I thing from something weird--but they no longer list it). as far as I know this is the first film ever directed in america by a turk (and a former turkish olympian in the '50s). he is now considered a cult porn director for the films he made in the '70s (which I have never seen). he now resides in pasadena, CA.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Jack-- I'm 'just' a western fan who has had a life-long interest in things turkish (since age 10). as a record collector, started picking up turkish music about '70. 1st visit in '73. 2nd visit in '77 I picked up 50 cassettes of mostly amazing music, including one which is trad folk music but sounds like the greatest garage-psych band you've never heard. in '91 I came to istanbul for a month determined to find out if there was such a thing as turkish rock and turkish horror films. turkish rock was amazing and though horror was lacking, there were all these great fantastic films. moved to istanbul in '96 and still here and got to meet all those old turkish rockers and thru my friendship with metin demirhan got to meet lots of cool old directors (esp. Fikret Ucak of 3 dev adam) and actors.
BTW: 30 years ago, for my oldest friend who decided to become a rock musician after I gave him the 1st velvet underground album when we were 15 in mid '60s, I put together a cassette called SONGS THE VELVETS TAUGHT US, which were all songs from the various albums of turkish music that I collected from various countries that sounded like they were influenced by the velvet underground (these were mostly musicians from rural villages that had obviously never heard of the velvets). when mark of sublime frequencies was visiting a month ago, he said if I could find it it could definitely be released. alas, it is long gone. when Jonathan (Richman) came here 5 yrs ago to start his latest european tour, I was his tour manager in turkey-- it was the most time we'd spent together since we were teenagers and it was great fun... sorry for being so long winded.

  32. No need to apologise, LOL. I'd rather readers rave about themselves and their stories than I don't know who they are at all. And thanks! All very interesting.

And I must say you've been very dedicated towards Turkish pop culture. Imagine even moving there! Very cool. I didn't discover their films till 6 or 7 yrs ago (and I know nothing about their music). But then again Turkish pop cinema is an easy thing to miss here simply cos you really have to make an effort to find it.

Too bad you couldn't find the "Songs the Velvets..." cassette. I'm sure you know the legend that everybody who bought the Banana record went out and formed a band. LOL.

So you've been in Turkey for 14 yrs now, are you there for good? You knew Metin Demirhan? Too sad about him (and his passing). Gokay of Ciko wrote about it on Cinehound at the time.

Sorry, no I haven't watched SOME LIKE IT VIOLENT.

Thanks for the info on Dracula in Istanbul. And please let us know if you find out why it was withdrawn. And yeah subs would definitely be nice if they (he) put out a new version.

I'm aware Bill Barounis didn't want to release it on Onar as it's so easy to download an illegal copy from the Internet.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I know the Velvets legend; unfortunately everyone who formed a band (except Jonathan Richman) used the 3rd Velvets album for their template and they mostly sucked. Jonathn's template was more akin to white light/white heat crossed with Buddy Holly...I don't know if I'll be in Istanbul for good, but it seems like it now...Metin was a very good friend for 10 years and I miss him very much.I met Gokay last fall for the 1st time-- we were surprised we'd never met in Metin's shop (which had Aytekin Akkaya's uniform from Dunya'ya Kurtaran Adam in the window, along with his sword... I'm surprised Bill hasn't included a doc about metin as an Onar dvd extra, which was made a few years before his death...as for Drakula, I think it had something to do with the rights, which makes no sense to me for a film shot in 1951, as I'm sure the filmmakers hadn't received permission from the Stoker estate, which after all caused big problems for the original Nosferatu. As for Bill releasing Drakula-- if he could get his hands on the long tv interview with Bulent Oran, and have english subs, it might be worth it... as for turkish music-- they had the longest lasting psychedelic rock scene in the world and perhaps the best-- are you familiar with the american '60s band Kaleidoscope? On their 1st 3 albums a lot of their music was turkish influenced (the lead singer lived in turkey til he was 12 and played the saz). you've gotta hear this kaleidoscope stuff (they were jimmy page's favorite band when he was in led zeppelin (and they were much much better than zeppelin)). think of a country in which there were dozens of bands just as good as kaleidoscope or better (in some cases, i.e. Erkin Koray's ELEKTRONIC TURKELER). turkish folk music is great and I even like the classical music (I can't stand western classical music in general).

  37. well, sometimes my life is 'cool' but its mostly quiet and normal like other people...as for G.A., he is the reason there will be no 2nd volume. I did 95% of the work and he mainly fucked up; and then stole $10,000 worth of records from me... I met Marthy Coumans yrs ago and he seemed like a nice guy but I can't fully trust anyone who works with GA...and I heard their Raks,Raks, Raks, which got great reviews but is really terrible... there are already other comps out: one is from france but mainly rehashes what's already been released as with the comp turkedelic.there's an american dj who has put out a cd of'remixed' turkish stuff but I think without permission; its ohno-- the (something) experiment) (a friend has borrowed my copy). he did the same thing with ethiopian music.) I think his more famous brother is the one who stole some music from a dead saz player (who died tragically in the '90s) and used it on a big hit for nelly furtado and then had to pay the label here $18,000...as for future comps, I'm sure there will be cause there is still so much turkish stuff never been reissued.

    ReplyDelete
  38. erkin's sublime frequencies will NOT be a best of compilation 'similar to the one that was on shadoks music.' the SF will be excellent and put together by Mark. 10 years ago Mark stayed with me here for a week. he listened to my box of erkin tapes and kept groaning cause he'd paid $55 for that shadoks atrocity (did u read my review of that in UT?) these commercially available tapes were in stereo, at the right speed, and had the complete songs. the guy at shadoks got his start by bootlegging stuff and then paying when people found out. he doesn't know or care for any of the music and is only in it for the money. I could go on and tell a terrible story about him but...

  39. sorry xanthor for bringing up some bad memories. No wonder EK doesn't want a cd of that double comp put out.it seems that we the buyers don't know half of what goes on behind the scenes with these record releases.DJfabyo from france i've got his anatolia rocks part 1. No 2 is coming out this month sometime according to his blog.Dr oh no i think that was the dj you mentioned.i don't really like hip hop mixes of turkish psych songs.I've got mahssa oyun havasi vol 1 which has got about 12 turkish songs on it unlisted without track separation.Yeah turkudelic is mainly a rehash Cdr with cover art work. tombei

  40. 'So those guys at finders keepers don't pay royalties.' they do pay some--I've heard that they paid mustafa Ozkent. last year a friend of mine (a well known american record producer) saw them Djing and went up and they had a nice conversation but when he started asking about their turkish releases he said that 'they literally ran away from me.' in the past few months they have been very coy about Selda, saying that they tried to email her but she would email back saying 'she was dead' but they finally came to an agreement and that her CD sold 10,000 copies. I emailed the link to one of these interviews to a producer friend here. the next day he was meeting with a label owner in Unkapani and told him the story. this guy then picked up the phone and called Selda. She said:'they didn't call or email me, didn't ask for or receive permission, and didn't pay me.' and if you are a subscriber to Soundscan, which tracks sales for labels and producers, you'd know that her CD sold 30,000+ (as of last year). All Selda's releases have been in print for 20 years or longer, and she is not difficult to get in touch with if you make the effort...3 hurel are great and I interviewed the leader about 10 years ago; I met selcuk & rana alagoz at a mavi isiklar concert; esin engin's music is ok; bunalim is great but their CD lacks 6 tracks where they back other musicians;hardal- I don't like; husnu ozkartal, metin aksu-- these 2 guys don't ring a bell with me; where did u ever hear kontlar?
    the most representative zen album
is the live one, which was recorded at a mental hospital (it was very strange-- aside from the band and friends and a few drs+nurses the audience were all patients)...'Was that cassette you found that sounded like the greatest garage psych album, the mustafa ozkent one?'
NO. I'd heard this years ago under a different title years ago and thought it was ok but nothing special. (another synth-pop album is much better and I found out it is unfortunately going to be booted. I have the phone # of the musician's widow and was about to ask if she would like to have a legit release of his stuff but I guess this can't happen now).what I picked up was just 2 guys on saz and percussion. the tape had no artist name just the type of music and is PHENOMINAL.when I would play it for people (not telling them anything about it) they would describe it as garage-psych and compare it to 13th floor elevators.
BTW: have u heard Erkin's Live in Nazilli show or the agri avi efsanesi (a group formed by members of mogollar+mavi isiklar in early '70s, which includes singles and live in the living room 1st rehearsal session)? both can be downloaded from internet thanks to the fuckup GA. I wrote liner notes for the erkin cause it was gonna be a legit reissue in america 10 years ago until it was uploaded to the internet.its low fidelity but perhaps the greatest live concert I've ever heard.

'No wonder EK doesn't want a cd of that double comp put out.' at the time, I was suppose to have my own label (in america for legit releases of this great turkish stuff 14 years ago). my partner put an ad in Goldmine for E.K.-Turkish Psych Monster vol 1. then my friend was inundated with phone calls, faxes, emails, etc. threatening a lawsuit from that douche bag at shadoks. We had Erkin's permission, they didn't (according to erkin, all shadoks had done was buy a copy of Elektronik turkoler from him, not permission. My partner, who'd been in the music biz for 30+ years, tried to reason with shadoks, as we were going to release different material; i.e. Erkin's good stuff.'but shadoks
was irrational and unreasonable. we knew we had the law on our side but my partner couldn't afford a law suit even though he knew he would win-- he just didn't have the money to fight; he said he'd never dealt with anyone who wouldn't even discuss the situation before. 'it seems that we the buyers don't know half of what goes on behind the scenes.' that's for sure! (a friend lent a a copy of a live baris manco show to a friend of his + the next thing he knows it's a vinyl bootleg... DJfabyo was another rehash; dr oh no- blah blah... a friend is shopping a live cem karaca show right now. I have a number of live shows of him in london in '77, same with baris-- I was living in London in '77 and almost went to see Baris Manco (even though I didn't know who he was at the time-- just because he was a turkish rocker) but I'd just gotten out of the hospital with hepatitus (I think Baris had the same thing at the time)... I just watched IGUANA WITH THE TONGUE OF FIRE for the 1st time and quite liked it. (this is a movie blog after all)... man do I hate this 'word verification.' does anyone else have problems with it? every time, it says I made a mistake 2 or 3 times before it will accept. 'I'm also missing the vinyl lp of turkish delights'-- the CD is better.'the electric turk boot from 95' this was released on vinyl in germany and is legit (although there are also about 5 boots of the same album). '& that jazz funk lp bosporus bridges'. never heard it.

'WOW 30,OOO COPIES not to mention the ad and that hip hop/rap sampling guy don't know his name. She's lost a lot of revenue that's for sure.' considering that their production costs are minimal, FK might have made $100,000-300,000 from 'their' Selda release. what is the ad that you refer to?

'With that boot lp you mentioned, Hopefully it's not the sentetik oyun havallari lp by metin alatli.'
that's the one. and I could have done it justice with cool liner notes and assorted pics, etc.
BTW: look for lots of VERY cool stuff from sublime frequencies: they've just released a dbl lp Omar Khorshid and an Indonesian CD & lots more to come (and they have permission) (stuff I can't talk about, but I'm salivating waiting for it). I got to see Sir Richard Bishop the other brother in concert 6 weeks ago and he was great; just after seeing the amazing Chris Corsano for the 2nd time. they have a group with the leader of 6 organs of admittance, which I hope will come to Istanbul. Richard and Alan's old band SUN CITY GIRLS were the best band in the world in the '90s (saw them 4 times); Zen might have been #2 or #3.

The bosporus bridges was a bootleg lp comp from 2005 with turkish psych, funk and jazz tracks on it mainly from the 70s.I think it was taken off the market for some reason.the liner notes were pretty silly.the guy didn't know what he was talking about, also the cover art was a horrible bright orange collage with baris on the cover even though he wasn't on the record itself. It also goes for big bucks 100 -150 dollars.

  48. 'i downloaded the live in nazilli concert off some french site.it sounded muffled and noisy but you can still tell it was a great performance.' in '74, Erkin Koray Super Grup did an Aegean tour. drummer Nihat Orarel had a boombox + cheap tape and recorded every performance to listen to after. so the same tape was copied over+over again. what you heard was what was left on the tape after the last concert. he'd been in Bunalim & he told me that they'd backed Erol Buyukburc (the 1st turkish pop star) on a tour in the early '70s. and that Erol was very happy. Nihat described it as 'Elvis backed by Led Zeppelin.'
BTW: have you heard REPLIKAS- AVAZ,which is the best turkish rock album in 30 years. there is a hidden track where the band (along with producer Wharton Tiers) cover the 1st Bunalim single 'Tas Var Kopek Yok.' It's great!

'kontlar basically have one great surf 45 in the shadows/astronauts style.their other 2 singles are just okay.' 12 years ago, a member of the band (although it may have been the band Kontrastlar-- I always confuse them) lent a live '60s concert tape to a friend of mine who lent it to GA, who to the best of my knowledge has never returned it...listening to them on myspace- hadn't heard in a long time, very nice. there is another version of Arpa Bugday that is even better, and Replikas also do it occasionally... 'The rap guy i was trying to think of was mosdef' yeh, the older brother of oh no...
I can't access the 'the oh no/selda sample' either...
BTW: did you know that Metin Demirhan was a noted cartoonist; right now I'm looking at one that he did just for me. When he died he was nearing completion of a low budget slasher movie that he'd been shooting for over a year on weekends. He'd offered me a cameo but I'd passed (due to the fact that I worked weekends) but we were talking about my being in his 2nd film. I could tell you stories about when he had the rights (from Cetin Inanc) to do a sequel to DUNYA'YA KURTARAN ADAM. it could've been so much better than the horrible film that actually got made. did you know that Fikret Ucak did a Tarkan film a few years before the one that got released by Mondo Macabro (starring a different actor)? Fikret was a very cool guy! He told me lots of great stories... damn I hate word verification.

  49. yep, i finally accessed that skateboard game video it's definetly ince ince by selda.i think it's similar to what playstation did with mogollar's garip coban and clark's shoes with ersen's gunese don cicegim.i actually went and saw the son of the man who saves the world at a cinema here in australia and it was mostly a no show.just me and a couple of relatives.lol they ran the movie for 3 people.hahaha.i thought it was boring and was trying too hard to be funny but it wasn't.looked more like unfunny star trek spoof with lucasfilm styled cgi graphics.they should've done it with metin demirhan and cetin inanc and aytekin akkaya as you said.didn't know m.demirhan was a cartoonist.from memory was that the tarkan film with orhan gunsiray ? i think he did a tarkan type flick ? I haven't heard of the replicas stuff the only new stuff i've got is fairuz derin bulut, erkin's 90s recordings and some other things i can't recall..

  50. I've never seen the sequel to DUNYA'YA KURTARAN ADAM (aka The Man Who Saves the World/Turkish Star Wars) but Ayman Kole told me it was done by a different company than the one who did the original. "word verification"! Tell me about it! My American spell-checker keeps telling me my British/Aussie spelling is wrong, haha.

Btw, no this isn't a film blog so anything goes. I used to do a couple of movie fanzines and wanted the blog to write about, ahm, me and whatever's on my mind (LOL). Somehow it just turned mostly to films. But all this about Turkish music is awesome! I just don't know very much about it.

    ReplyDelete
  51. 'from memory was that the tarkan film with orhan gunsiray?' no, it was Tarkan Camoka'ya karsi ('69) with Hasan Demirtag as Tarkan. Orhan was in DEATH WARRIOR and also played Karaoglan in '62. The best known tarkan directed the dunya'ya kurtaran adam sequel (badly), which starred the worst actor in the world mehmet ali hairball, who is a major star here and terrible. I've been told that once upon a time when he was a stage actor that he was the best ever turkish Hamlet, which is very hard to believe... kamuran akkor rules! apaslar were great-- replikas covered a song by them and tried to get their guitar player to play with them but he declined saying he hadn't played guitar in decades...1/2 of the 1st fairuz derin bulut is very good psych but the 2nd album is arabesque and not for me...'erkin's 90s recordings' are garbage; his last good album was almost 30 years ago: ILLA KI. the 1st 3 songs were all hits. for a mutual friend of mine and erkin, I played an album with 3 songs that were exactly the same as erkin's but not sung in turkish. this friend told erkin who immediately got very upset and vehemently said: "Who stole my songs!" my friend said to Erkin: THE DEVIL'S ANVIL, an american band whose album came out in June '67. Erkin had no response...
BTW: have you heard WAKING SHEHERAZADE? (I think marthy coumins released it but I'm not sure). It's a fantastic album of '60s middle eastern rock...

Since you seem interested in turkish music here are some links to REPLIKAS, whose 3rd album AVAZ is the best turkish rock album in 30 years. and in concert they on occasion cover some of the old great turkish rock songs. since youtube is banned in turkey, I got to these videos thru vtunnel. let me know if it works for you and what you think of these songs.

another excellent current turkish band is AYYUKA, who have one album out so far. HAYVANLAR ALEMI from Ankara will have an album released on Sublime Frequencies later this year. all 3 bands are friends of mine and are really nice guys; all
    3 bands have myspace pages.
and don't forget RASHIT whose latest releases are very good, such as the mini album DINAZOR, and a single released yesterday that they did with 72 year old pop singer Gönül Yazar:

  52. almost forgot: if you're really into old turkish film you should get 5555, which is a humongous book with reproductions of 5555 turkish film posters. 2 weeks ago, a new book of turkish film posters was released, with many fewer posters but larger reproductions; I haven't had a chance to check it out beyond a quick perusal so far but I'll let you know if it is worthwhile...
and tomorrow I'll check out ADA the new turkish zombie flick.
BTW: check out YILMAZ GUNEY'S AC KURTLAR, which is a way way COOL anatolian spaghetti western that you can get from Gokay at his ebay site...
and today I bought the new teach yourself baglama from the legendary arif sag (I met him 2 years ago and he is a really nice guy) and Erdal Erzincan; it is turkish and english.
pick it up so that next year you can form your own anadolu rock band.

EK has got two versions of cicek dag,one off the golden microphone single another version with dubbed applause with a more fuller sound.i also like zafer dilek's version too.

'I'm not really into yilmaz guney flicks.' AC KURTLAR is really a cool spaghetti western shot in winter- Its all white and grey: snow, snow, snow...
kartal tibet was a lousy actor and worse director. but I have a dumb western he did with a ridiculous bar room scene with a huge cardboard guitar, Semiramis Pekin (sister of Ajda), and suitably inappropriate music--it is priceless.

'I've got that cedars mini lp compilation on groovie records I think with liner notes by mike stax.' I don't have this but probably have all the music; I wish I had the Stax liner notes-- he really knows his stuff!

    'i like erol buyukburc,alpay,'
(both had cool anadolu rock singles in the '70s)
'haramiler' (this is the band that also did Arpa Bugday) 'beybonlar' (only one single that I know of)
'zafer dilek' (he made many cool belly dance albums), 'donusum'(only band other than Teddy Robin & the Playboys from Hong Kong (that I know of) led by a hunchback and to find out what he's doing now, check out:
    http://www.tumata.com/99ing_default.aspx)
'cigrisim' (leader use to have a record shop in Istanbul, then moved to Zongulduk on the BlaCK SEA) 'mazhar ve fuat' (1st album very nice; then they added an 'O' and became MFO and have been successful ever since, but I've never been interested. M&F were members of Kaygizizlar who had some ok singles but were fantastically psychedelic as Baris Manco's backing band in the '60s).
'cem karaca & kardaslar puskullu moruk (?)rock opera mini lp.' doesn't ring a bell offhand but I'm sure I've heard it.
Kardaslar were very similar to Mogollar (and they also backed Selda on some songs) and one member had been in apaslar; and had many really good singles on their own but seem to have been forgotten...
speaking of THE CEDARS: their song 'for your information' had at least 20 cover versions in turkey in the '70s, my favorite being by mavi isiklar. the flip of the single was also covered...
you gotta check out FIKRET KIZILOK: there's a CD collection of his singles (but unfortunately not his early rock stuff) that really rocks and his album ZAMAN, ZAMAN is a masterpiece (though not a rock album but has been readily available on CD for 20 yrs...

a friend gave me some MP3s of gonul yazar but I haven't listened to them properly yet. her new single with Rashit is very good...
that site for images of turkish rock, psych, pop records is pretty cool. Zeki Muren was the biggest turkish pop star ever (he was known as THE SUN KING) and at least towards the end of his career was flamboyantly homosexual and looked like '60s/'70s comedienne Totie Fields (does anyone know her/remember her from ed sullivan show, tonight show, etc? (I have a strange childhood connection to her)); but his fans said he's not gay he's 'a nice boy.' Zeki once told a friend's father (they went to high school together): 'If you lined up all the cocks I've sucked from end-to-end, it would reach to the moon and back.' I think rather than SUN KING , he should've been known as the Suck King...

  64. '5555 posters !!!! that book would have nearly all the turkish films ever made ?'
NO. the guy who did it slacked off and only covered 1940-1990. Moreover, I once described a cool film poster I had to Metin (a kung fu movie set in Cappadocia (the bodies were obviously from another film and were not correctly attached to the stars' heads). he didn't know of the film and told me that in the '70s there were some films made specifically for the anatolian peasants that never made it to the big cities like istanbul, ankara, izmir; thus, film scholars and others are probably totally unaware of their existence.
BTW: I went to check out that new poster book but all were sealed in plastic and cost 80 TL. I looked on the back and realized that I knew the guy who put it together (who is an unfriendly douche bag)-- so I'll wait a year and get a copy for 40TL.

'Oh man,I thought zeki was an effeminate celibate male peacock. tell me it's not true.'
sorry to break your heart, but it is true. and he liked teenage boys:
a rock musician I know was walking along the street in Bodrum (Bedroom) when he was 15. Zeki was sitting in an outdoor cafe and saw the 15 yr old and beckoned and said: "Come here pretty boy."
    the boy fled.

'some of his (Fikrit Kizilok) early 60s stuff is on that go larda bootleg cdr.'
wow! where did you get it? it was only sold in one shop in Beyoglu.
Fikrit also played in Cahit Oban's band in the mid '60s. I've got a CDr of all Cahit's singles...

'know about a dozen of the 'information' covers,I got them on mp3 off some blog about 2 years ago.'
do you have the address for this blog, I'd love to get this stuff.

'How come ugly things(apart from reviews) hasn't done a story on the turkish scene or at the very least an article on mavi isiklar?'
probably cause I havent done it. when other UT reviews have reviewed turkish stuff, they didnt really know what they were talking about.
I have a fascinating interview with one of the guys from Mogollar but I haven't transcribed it yet(its only been about 4 years). and a good one with Ersen that needs to be translated but all who said they'd do it have backed out. I should write about Mavi Isiklar cause they're all nice guys and friends who I haven't seen for a few years.
I also have an interview that I did with Jaki Leibzeit (who about 5 years ago had a group, K34, with 2 members of ZeN, which was excellent).its only been sitting around for 5 years. when I finally transcribe it I think that it will be the best interview ever published (in English) with a member of CAN. I was so amazed by what he told me that at the end I asked him if there was anything that he wouldn't feel comfortable seeing in print.

'I wonder what the actual number of films made in turkey is ??'

that's just insane. this friend had a shop in beyoglu and he made these CDrs of stuff that wasn't readily available and sold them for about $1.50 until he went into the army. I have a lot of his comps and collections. and its great stuff that, such as sadri alisik, ozturk serengil, turkish twist, etc. now he sells online. I had many very strange experiences that happened in his shop that were ridiculous beyond belief with musicians known and unknown... I can link to the guys site, I'll see if I can download stuff tomorrow (later today)... I don't know of these other cover versions...
are you familiar with Secret Chiefs (they play middle eastern rock)? and are coming to istanbul this week; I may see them. also dengue fever are here in a day or two; I saw them last year and were much much better than their Cds had led me to believe.

  71. 'International Sad Hits'
Nice comp. I'm one of the people thanked inside.
Damon & Naomi played here a few years ago and I hung out with them for a while. while walking back to their hotel, I asked her who here favorite band was. She said: 'CAN.' I said: 'really?' and she said:" you're the one who first told us about them."
I hadn't seen them for about 15 years; it was nice hanging out with them.
'There needs to be a turkish twist compilation.'
the two best are by Adnan Varvaran & Ozturk Serengil (who was best known as an actor playing bad guys).
They both sang songs called ABIDIK GUBIDIK TWIST-- 'the twist' being that the 2 songs are completely different! and both are great. someone translated the lyrics of one of them for me. abidik gubidik has a similar meaning to ' womp bomp a lu bomp a lomp bam boom.' Baris manco had a couple of twist songs. the problem with a turkish twist comp is that most of them sound exactly alike. still its cool to hear a twist song with saz rather than guitar being the lead instrument... Alpay's backing band had MAC TWIST, which featured a guitar player from California's inland empire.
BTW: for a time, while their bass player did his military service, Mavi Isiklar's fill in bass player was from Calif. surf band THE REVELAIRS, who you can read about in John Dailey's big book on surf bands.
Secret chiefs' leader use to be in mr bungle (who I've never heard) and faith no more (ditto). their best albums: SECOND GRAND CONSTITUTION AND BYLAWS; BOOK M; BOOK OF HORIZONS; EYES OF FLESH EYES OF FLAME. avoid XAPHAN like the plague-- its an album of music composed by the talentless John Zorn. they also have a new album of music for GIALLO soundtracks that I haven't heard. plenty of cool middleeastern rock on the 1st 4 albums...
if u gotta wait til next week to watch the videos, u gotta wait-- but the UIGHUR ERKIN KORAY is amazing. Mark and Alan of sublime frequencies were blown away when I sent them these links a few months ago. REPLIKAS and the others are worth it too. wait to u see a 72 year old Gönül Yazar in her punk/debby harry outfit...

almost forgot to post this link:

this virginia dj who is obsessed with malay 60s' pop like I am with turkish is trying to raise $3000 by the end of the week. if he does he will spend 3 weeks in malaysia & singapore to get the info and permissions for a comp for SF. some cool stuff on his sites like malay rock n roll movies that look really cool. strangely enough while turkey's 1st rock band dates back to 1956, there were no rock movies here although bands like uc hurel (I have a nice lobby card), mavi isiklar (appeared with fatma girek), and others appeared in turk films. I collect turkish lobby cards with rock bands in them (most of the bands are fake).

  72. I don't have that international sad hits disc but I will eventually get round to buying it sometime soon.yep i've got abidik gubidik twist by ozturk serengil on a cd & his in a movie with turkan soray and at the start of the film he sings the song with his twist combo.pretty wild stuff,i always think of the song as if were a trashmen song done by turkish comic actor who's a twister and a rocker.lol.The title could also mean something like abra cadabra twist. I've got the baris 1962 twist records as mp3s and I think on a vinyl compilation put out a couple of years ago on that turkuola label from germany.Yes i've heard about the revellaires story.I've got their recordings on a cd called rare surf volume something or rather. That guy who came from the states was a friend of the lead singer when he lived in america before the formation of MI.
also that baris song "the jet" I think, is briefly used in an early 60s movie called genc kizlar (the young girls)starring turkan soray and hulya kocyigit.it's briefly used in dancehall sequence. In another film called dokuzuncu hariciye kogusu also starring hulya kocyigit has a sequence where a band is singing "watch ya gonna do about it" which sounds like the koray version off that 66 ep.that fatma girik film with the mavi isiklar is on you tube I've seen both the clips with and without fatma girik. Can you tell me which film the 3 hurel are in,is it when they were part of the selcuk/rana alagoz band or ..... ??

Good luck to that dj from virginia with his malaysian obsession.
Rock and roll in the Turkey began with a naval academy band sometime in 1955/6 didn't it ? I think erkut tackin along with some others(can't remember their names off hand) were a part of that band.Erkin and Baris followed soon after.I'd like to see those turkish rock and roll lobby cards you have. Also do you have those postcards put out with film stars, singers and rock stars on 'em? I've got some baris manco stickers from the late 80s or possibly from the early 90s.

  75. 'Ozturk Serengil sings the song with his twist combo.pretty wild stuff,i always think of the song as if were a trashmen song done by turkish comic actor who's a twister and a rocker.'
unfortunately,I've never seen his films, but he was a comic bad guy.I like yr description. I have 2 CDrs of his songs. Sadri Alisik of The Turkish Star Trek and Ah Guzel Istanbul (a really good film) also had a number of very nice rockin' records...
'The title could also mean something like abra cadabra twist.'
I've asked and most say it is just nonsense syllables, but a few say it might be ABiDik: ABD=USA in Turkish...

'That guy who came from the states was a friend of the lead singer when he lived in america before the formation of MI.'
singer Necat Toksoy was a high school exchange student in the US in early '60s. he lived with an american family where his 'big brother' Bruce later joined The Revellaires...

I've never seen the films with the rock songs u mention and access to youtube is blocked in turkey.as far as I know, Uc hurel never played with rana & selcuk but were always 3 Hurel from there home in traibzon til they came to istanbul. 3 hurel were in CULSUZ ALI starring Ozturk Serengil & Mine Mutlu (who committed suicide) + directed by Sirri Gultekin.

I think Kardaslar also appeared in a film.

'during that early stage of turkish RnR 1955-1961,were there any recordings made including on film appearances? those early twist records seem to be the first real turkish RnR records made!?!?'
the 1st real RnR record was a single by Erkin Koray in '62 and its damn good. he also appeared in a film about '62. I've never met anyone who has seen it, by I've seen a still from the film with Erkin playing an acoustic guitar. I don't know of any other films that early with a real rocker in them.
The 1st rock band was formed in '56 by Erkin when he was at Galatsaray Lise in Istanbul. about 2 years later, Baris was appearing regularly on radio singing r&b and RnR. Baris did some amazing recordins in '61 or '62 that didn't surface until the label that put out his 1st album released a comp of artist on its label about '70. these 2 songs are way advanced beyond what he was releasing like the twist stuff or the mid '60s EP that was released in France (and finally released in turkey last year on CD). these 2 songs seem light years beyond what anyone was doing anywhere in the world in '62...

'I'd like to see those turkish rock and roll lobby cards you have.'
How do you upload them? (I've never done it before. they're too big to scan. My girlfriend could take pics on her cell phone). they're not really RnR lobby cards but have bands in them; I also collect pics with same stuff. you can see some in Hava Narghile...

'Also do you have those postcards put out with film stars, singers and rock stars on 'em?'
some good ones but not many; but I have a Baris Manco fumetti...

there use to be a site where the guy had found a cool pic of his uncle showing Istanbul rocknrollers in '56. these were poor kids but they dressed real sharp. and he talked about the influence of elvis presley in turkey...

I don't like MI's cover of the doors; havent heard of the other band.

  76. I started watching ADA but had to stop after 37 minutes cause my girlfriend came home and she doesn't like horror films. so far, it's better than I expected but is filmed in the shakycam technique like blair witch and cloverfield, both of which I hated. but it reminded me of something: about the time that Metin was shooting his slasher film, he was helping a friend (a nice guy (Serkan?)who has worked on some commercials and mainstream features with his martial arts group)) who was making his 1st kung fu film. he's now working on his 4th but I can't find his website. maybe Gokay knows. I was watching some scenes from the 3rd film last year and discovered an expat friend (of 15 yrs) had a feature role. these might be of interest to trash kung fu fans.

  78. Imagine a horror film shot by a wedding photographer; well, here it is: ADA: ZOMBIE WEDDING; Turkey's 1st zombie film and shot in the shakycam style of such dreadful films as blair witch and cloverfield. The characters are all late 20s self-centered, shallow, ignorant grownup middle class mall rats that overrun today's Istanbul.

SEE 2 of the stars lying on a couch
    kicking, slapping, and
    biting(!) each other;

LISTEN to them being more concerned
    about not knowing soccer
    scores than about the zombie
    attacks;

HEAR the zombie plague blamed on:
    a) fried mussels;
    b) free coal given to poor
    people during elections;
    c) fake raki
    d) poor homeless people;
    e) traffic congestion;
    f) tuna casserole;

HEAR some bitch complain when they
    save her from zombies.

SEE zombies go to the mosque after
    hearing the ezan's call to
    prayer;

    LISTEN TO SCINTILATING DIALOGUE:

"Never put a gun on a raki table;"

    "Cannibals ate my girlfriend's ass!"

    SEE this film and
    ROOT!ROOT!ROOT! FOR THE ZOMBIES
    (alternate meaning in the
    Antipodes).

    I enjoyed this. Recommended.

  79. xanthor on that japanese doors covers compilation there are two songs by Mavi Isiklar, zaman and light my fire.I don't like their version of light my fire but zaman is a pretty good track.i didn't realise that zaman was a doors cover as you know it's sung in turkish.the other song pis sinek(mosquito) is by Arda Kardes, a 5 or 6 year old boy who sings(?!?!) the tune backed by a rock band.
You can scan the images and upload up to 200 images onto flickR for free, after 200 you'd have to pay.
The Hurel brothers were in a line up of the Alagoz band.they recorded one single with them in either 1969 or early 1970.feridun hurel even drew the cover art for the 45.after they split from the alagoz siblings they formed their own band 3 Hur-el in 1970.they also had or were in other bands in the mid to late 60s that never recorded.I also don't like giallo/slasher gory horror films either.i like some of the old horror movies.the only newer horror flicks I like are the thing with kurt russell, the shining and maybe evil dead 2,that's about it.I'm not into horror that much.
Also i've got that baris french ep reissue on cd,they should,ve used the original cover on it.i like that e.koray 'bir eylul aksami' 45 too.

is this a doors song? I think I heard this once or twice in a shop and it was great with some cool fuzz guitar if I remember correctly...

the info about Uc Hurel is interesting as I didn't know this and it didn't come up when I interviewed feridun 10 years ago but thats all kind of hazy now.
    where did you read/hear this?...

I checked out that sight for the singles-- I really like Orhan Gencebey with the sitar...

unfortunately, I don't have access to a scanner usually.

    the thing (1982)
    dracula in istanbul
    curse of the cat people
    the cat people(original version)
    the shining
    invisible invaders
    evil dead 2
    die monster die
    peeping tom
    circus of horrors
    I walked with a zombie
    planet of the vampires
    I was a teenage werewolf
    revenge of the creature
invasion of the body snatchers(70s version)
    the last man on earth
.....theres more but can't remember them off hand.

btw your review for ada was pretty funny.I'll review the clips you posted next week on this thread.

  84. I actually love horror films but my taste in them has greatly evolved over the years. for ex., I'm no longer interested in the universal or hammer that I use to like so much.

    the thing (1982)
this is one of the greats! did you know that a prequel is in the works?

    dracula in istanbul- of course

    curse of the cat people
    the cat people(original version)
haven't watched these since I was a kid; I'd love to see them now.

    evil dead 2-- fantastic!
    die monster die- haven't seen
    peeping tom- great
    circus of horrors- haven't seen
    I walked with a zombie-good film
planet of the vampires-I love this!
    I've had more repeat viewings of this than any other sf/horror film;
A couple of noir films I've watched more, such as DOA, DETOUR.

    I was a teenage werewolf
    revenge of the creature
haven't seen these since I was a kid

invasion of the body snatchers(70s version)-very good

    the last man on earth
I saw this in a theatre when I was a kid. I'd already read I AM LEGEND.
I use to watch everything with Price. then I saw him on johnny carson totally trashing jonathan winters and I never felt the same about him. I can still enjoy this though.
maybe I'll put together a list of my own and see what u think...

'btw your review for ada was pretty funny.'

  87. I found a proxy that works. Mosquito is the song I remember-- very cool.
checkout: Selcuk Alagöz - Bahçeye İndim ki it is a movie klip (wish I knew the film). it looks like the band includes 3Hurel... I listened to the A-side of the selcuk single you gave me the link to and its very good...
Erol Büyükburç - Black is Black from the film KIZILCILKAR OLDU MU.
some people consider him the start of rock/pop in turkey; others cem karaca; others Erkin.Koray. last year Erol (dressed in leather jacket and shades) was promoting a new single on tv- one song was very good and he doesn't take himself very seriously.
Erol Büyükburç-Gözlerime İyice Bak on the seyyal taner show in the '80s. she was a pop star/actress of '70s. this song sounds like it should be from '64. I love these old klips.

  88. That 'dugun alayi' track featuring 3hurel was reissued as a rana single in 1972 with a none hurel b-side,serial no. Tac Plak 9.Those 3 clips of the SA/RA orkestrasi are from 1971 from the film Ver Allah'im Ver.This line up is post 3hurel even though some of the members might resemble the said brothers.
I've seen those clips you mentioned. I think seyyal taner was married to one of the los bravos members who originally recorded black is black.

  89. Hey Anonymous-- thanks for the info, you really know your stuff. I never really got into Selcuk or Rana cause except for a few songs, I didn't really care for what I heard; not bad-- there was just so much other better stuff-- guess I missed some.
For many years (maybe still) they had/have a regular gig at a club in Elmadag. I always wanted to go check them out but it is a tourist joint where you have to spend 75-100TL and I didn't want to spend that much.

as for Seyyal Taner, I know her niece who use to/maybe still has a punk band. very talented and charismatic but she developed certain bad habits. for some reason, Metin always insisted that she was not related to Seyyal, who a few years ago asked some friends of mine (great band) to back her on some recordings but it didn't happen. I saw her on tv last fall with a young band-- it was okay but not as impressive as Gonul Yasar with RASHIT.

One of the cool things about living in Istanbul is that there are so many shows on all the time full of live music. tonight, we watched a show where Neset Ertas, the greatest living saz player, performed for over an hour. And its all kinds of turkish music-- pop. rock, folk, gypsy, fasil, jazz, classical; there's now a TRT arabic channel, but so far whenever I've turned it on its had turkish music-- the other day, it had a turkish group playing medieval music on turkish instruments.

  91. Even though SA/RA orkestra have a lot of good recordings, they've also have a lot of unlistenable stuff.Could that medieval turkish music group be "Bezmara".I believe they make and play their own instruments from the Ottoman empire.I've got 3 of there(Bezmara) cds.One of their cds was even sold in Australia at a regular music store.Maybe that trt arabic station is to promote turkish culture in the middle east and arabic speaking communities?
Do you have link for that site that you mentioned previously with turkish youth in the 1950s dressed as elvis or rock & rollers?

  92. Bezmara was not the band; I don't remember exactly but it was something like Ses Elvan. I take it that Bezmara are pretty good (I'd never heard of them).

'Maybe that trt arabic station is to promote turkish culture in the middle east and arabic speaking communities?'

that's probably it. there are news stations that broadcast in turkish, arabic, russian, and english. and we also have saudi, russian, german, and Italian channels.

Do you have link for that site that you mentioned previously with turkish youth in the 1950s dressed as elvis or rock & rollers?

I wish I did. for years if I wanted to show people I would google 'the effect (or influence) of Elvis Presley in Turkey' and it would come up on the 1st page. a couple of months ago, I tried and I went thru 15 pages looking and finally gave up. maybe you can find it from your country; as I know that google doesn't provide the same results country-country.

I'll try to dig up his name tomorrow but he was interviewed for one of Mike Stax's big articles about calif's inland empire articles a couple of years ago. he had been reluctant to be interviewed but had mentioned playing on a record and mike asked me if I could find it. I sent him a copy of the Turkish Twist CDr that I had.

'I found that site for that babylon magazine you mentioned.I saw a picture of the cover with MI,it looks pretty cool. Is it still available ?'

It's still available. 6 weeks ago, RASHIT had a CD release at Babylon (same people behind the zine and its the best concert club in Istanbul. and they had a large poster of the cover in a hallway so my girlfriend grabbed it for our home. a few days ago, she took the zine and had transparencies of the cover made that we have on our window.
This pic came from a disc that MI gave me years ago with about 150 different pictures & memorabilia of the band.

'Do you plan to write a book on turkish rock in english ?' No. when 6organs of admittance was here last year, ben chasney asked me the same thing. it won't happen, at least by me, for a variety of reasons.
BTW: lots of stuff on the web about turkish rock is by me, occasionally even atributed.

    I just found the info:

I'd never liked turkish art music. then one saturday (a weekly event for about 15 yrs) I walked into IN YOUR EAR Records on Comm Ave in Boston. a few days earlier someone had brought in a box of old turkish 78s. they'd bought it for $20 and saved it for me and said I could have it for $30.
I didn't get to hear them for 9 months cause I didn't have a 78 player, then I brought them over to
Glenn Jones (cul de sac) to listen to. some were okay then we listened to the 9 78s by Tamburi Cemal Bey and we were all mesmerized- amazing.
2 yrs later I gave them to traditional crossroads for what became a dbl CD(vol2&3) of TCB and I put the label in contact with a turkish engineer in baltimore who'd already digitized another 10 tracks.
harold was kind enough to send me a copy.

  102. I'm not a facebook member.couldn't get into that Baris jam session link......If not a Turkish rock book perhaps a biography on Mavi isiklar with all the memorablia you've got? I've got 2 copies of the Mavi Isiklar reissue of their 1968 lp on nexus-dama,also the best of cd with booklet on Ada records. The quality on the cd isn't very good but the lp is great.Maybe someday someone will put out a proper 'best of' with all their finest recordings off their lp and 45s.

    ReplyDelete
  103. 'perhaps a biography on Mavi isiklar with all the memorablia you've got?'

perhaps a long article after I transcribe a few things; I'll think about it.

'The quality on the cd isn't very good but the lp is great.'

I didn't mind the CD quality.

'Maybe a proper 'best of' with all their finest recordings off their lp and 45s.'

that's a great idea. they did some great garage covers (not their crap doors or the beatles (who I hate)). I wonder if any shows were taped when they reformed 10 yrs ago; 1st time I ever heard 'inna gada da vida'live. and they had a new song that was fantastic.

  104. Xanthor, yes,a long MI article sounds great. The quality on the ada cd is mixed, the 3 tracks off the lp are fine,as well as the box tops cover and a few other songs but some of the songs like uskudar and the very early tracks aren't all that clear. The booklet is excellent. Also have the two different releases of the altin mikrofon cd boxed sets.I read somewhere that MI made a brief comeback in the mid-70s and recorded a few tracks for a proposed single that never got released. With the 2000 reunion, did they only do one live gig ? Maybe someone's got a soundboard recording of the gig,who knows ?
I also don't like the beatles that much,I'm more of a Yardbirds fan but their cover of yesterday sung in turkish is better than the original and I hate obla-di obla- da.

  105. 'some of the songs like uskudar&the very early tracks aren't all that clear. The booklet is excellent.'

I'll have to listen to the CD again.

'I read somewhere that MI made a brief comeback in the mid-70s and recorded a few tracks for a proposed single that never got released.'

I don't know about this but Necat
had a band for a while with Murat Ses.

although in the '60s TRT was the only station in turkey that most people knew, MI had a gig on police radio (this might only be in Istanbul) and played live regularly.
they had these tapes but unfortunately they disintegrated.

'With the 2000 reunion, did they only do one live gig ? Maybe someone's got a soundboard recording of the gig,who knows ?'

they did a number of gigs.I saw them at least 3 or 4 times. at the 1st, which got media coverage, there were news cameramen but I don't know how much of the show was shot.one can only hope that there were board tapes...
over the years, even when they weren't performing live, the members would get together and play (one or more were out of the country for a while). then they start gigging and being very well received and broke up over 'musical differences.'

10 years ago, 2 dutch filmmakers taped an interview with them for a proposed documentary about the old turkish rock scene, but I don't think anything ever came of it. I got interviewed for this too.

'I also don't like the beatles that much,I'm more of a Yardbirds fan but their cover of yesterday sung in turkish is better than the original and I hate obla-di'

I've loved The Yardbirds since their hits in the '60s. they played here 4 or 5 years ago and they were excellent; unfortuantley, the show was not well promoted.
yesterday and obladi are two of my most hated beatles songs (and I dont like their other songs much either).

BTW: did u know that Mogollar were offered the chance to release a single in the US in the early '70s but passed?

  107. Shame about that lost police radio show.Yep I've heard about the murat ses agri dag efsanesi group with necat toksoy. The 74 or 75 MI lineup was almost entirely new with only one or two members from the original band.I read it on a site that was quoting from a turkish rock book .The names of the unreleased songs were given which were completely different to their earlier songs.
Didn't know about mogollar being offered a chance to release a Us single, but on ebay I saw an ep once from the usa with mogollar and baris songs on it.The trax were derule and a couple of songs off the 1st mogollar lp recorded in france. It could've been a bootleg from the 70s who knows. It would've been cool if that dutch documentary was made.Do you have any concert posters for those reunion shows ? .The yardbirds did actually play istanbul !!! do you know if soundboards of these gigs exist ? Also Mi use to perform 'for your love' in their concerts in the 60s.....
Do you know anything about a bulgarian(?) MI bootleg cassette called "once we were bigger than tarkan" or something similar to that title ????

  108. xanthor thanks i've got all those songs and most of those videos downloaded from someone called GOLFJVC from belgium on you-tube.That siluetler lp was or is available for download off many sites including a russian one. Also have that mogollar/siluetler cd & cassette that's still available.

no but there might be a copy on the disc they gave me.

'The yardbirds did actually play istanbul !!! do you know if soundboards of these gigs exist ?'

No idea; but there is a legit CD of that band live at BB King's Blues Club in NYC, and its excellent.

'Also Mi use to perform 'for your love'in their concerts in the '60s.

    didn't know this.

i've got the live at bb kings concert cd.Greg russo hasn't got those turkish dates in the yardbirds concertography section of his yardbirds biography.

  112. That colored vinyl looks groovy!

13 years ago in a shop I met a crazy Iranian expat living in canada (record dealer who came to istanbul looking for rarities to sell) who told me about all these great Iranian psych records from the '60s. I use to see all these iranian 45s but none were ever good. he was also trying to get Erkin to come to canada to record an album with the old canadian band BENT WIND. I use to have a CD of their album-not overly impressed.

'Do you know the dates of those yardbirds concerts in istanbul ?'

    http://www.garaj.org/haber/9976/the-yardbirds-ankara-istanbul

while looking for the yardbirds info, I came across this: (at a site discussing HEART FULL OF SOUL & PAINT IT BLACK)

'The flavor of this record is not "Eastern" in the sense of Indian, like so many other recordings from 1966-1969. It is actually MIDDLE Eastern--specifically Turkish. It has been forgotten over the years that before the influence of Indian-influenced sounds in the psychedelic era of the 60s, there was a recurring Turkish influence. You hear it most clearly in the Rolling Stones' song "Paint It Black." You can almost visualize belly-dancers in that song. "Heart Full of Soul" was another good example of the Turkish sound.... What would attract a bunch of British rock-n-rollers to the culture of Istanbul?... Hmmm... Maybe the hooka?'

BTW: in HEY (the leading turkish rock mag of the '70s, Baris Manco claimed that his guitar player Jonathan Glemser had played with the Yardbirds. I asked a Yardbirds authority about this and he laughed; and I asked Jimmy McCarty and he said he'd never heard of him. don't know why Baris
made this claim. glemser played with him off and on in '70s, the earliest I know of being 'Derhule'(Barış Manço & ...Ve).
he also played on Baris' english lang. album. I just found out that he played with '70s Brit bands CLANCY (where he worked with a future member of the 3MUSTAPHAS3) and HELP YOURSELF.

A turk friend born and raised in London tried to track down Glemser but reached a dead end and was led to believe he might have ended up in a mental institution.

also, 2 years ago a friend in Paris (at my instigation) asked the label owner who put out the Baris ep about it and were there more unreleased? but he's in his '80s and said: 'Baris who?'

  113. thanks for the links.i've read that discussion about the yardbirds (also the hollies, kaleidascope(US)Etc) being influenced by turkish music before when trying to look for those gig dates which i thought were made up because no one ever talked about them or mentioned them on various forums and books etc..yes jonathan glemser, being an early yardbirds member. hahaha,he must've told baris a big fib,he could've been in a band that supported the Ybs or was just at a gig that would've been easier to believe !!! did you know that the original Ybs guitarist top topham is a moslem(mentioned in russo's book as well as some sites),he converted in the early 70s ???

I didn't like the iranian/persian stuff that much either !! too rough sounding for the 60s stuff and the funk psych stuff sounds more like eccentric world jazz fusion music not the stuff we're into.having said that i haven't heard enough of the iranian stuff there might be good stuff but they haven't put it out yet ??

  115. baris manco &/ve/etc whatever recorded from memory about 6 songs, derule 45,daglar daglar 45 and i think some songs on that turkuola cassette from germany called sari cizmeli mehmet aga. They fucked up when that cassette was released as a cd/mc in turkey.all the songs that were rare were left off and other unlisted songs were put in their place and some tracks weren't separated because I think they coulldn't figure out when the tracks ended .lol.

  116. 'i've read that discussion about the yardbirds Etc being influenced by turkish music before.'
    strange, I'd never read this.
Kaleidoscope's singer&saz player was raised in turkey til he was 12.
+ jimmypages favorite band in '60s.

'i thought (istanbul yardbirds gigs) were made up because no one ever talked about them or mentioned them on various forums and books etc.'
they were great and I got to talk to Relf & McCarty before and after.
I was talking to JM about seeing the original RENAISSANCE, when the harmonica player interupted to 'correct' my pronounciation of that band's name. nice guys.

'jonathan glemser, being an early yardbirds member. hahaha,he must've told baris a big fib.'
But wouldn't Baris have known? he started playing RnR in '50s, lived in Belgium, France, performed all over the world starting in '60s.

'did you know that the original Ybs guitarist top topham is a moslem'
no. maybe its more turkish influence

'is that you in the middle,in the photo at the bookstore ??'
in '91. store was run by deniz pinar (not in pic), who was the most important individual for the istanbul rock scene of the '90s. murat beser is on right; he's been writing about rock for 20+ years, is a dj, club booker, etc. and a thoroughly nice guy.

I've heard Kaleidoscope's stuff on the radio, taksim plus other tracks and I thought they were turkish at the time. The turkish guy in the band was from Izmit, i think can't remember his name ?

  118. 'I've heard Kaleidoscope's stuff on the radio, taksim plus other tracks and I thought they were turkish at the time. The turkish guy in the band was from Izmit, i think can't remember his name ?'

Until yesterday, I thought he was a turkish jew. but it turns out that he was born in idaho and didn't move to turkey until he was 10. I assumed he was a native-born turk cause Izmit just doesn't seem to be the sort of place anyone would move to (unless they had family there-- I visited 13 years ago). now I can't find the website with the info. You have to get the 1st 2 albums-- the 'turkish' stuff is great! and most of the folk stuff is excellent. a couple of tracks are kind of corny. there are a couple of excellent collections of their best stuff.

I use to have a live bootleg album that had live kaleidoscope on one side and it was great and sound quality was very good; another live boot semed like a very good show but sound sucked. check out:
    Wolfgang's Vault Newsletter
You can buy or listen for free to lots of live stuff from the '60s&'70s. they have one K-scope that is okay, but added a new, better, longer show about a month ago.

BTW: the actress Fairuza Balk is his daughter.

'Baris must've fibbed to bolster his band's reputation.'
unlikely as he was already one of the biggest stars in turkey, had releases in at least 3 euro countries, starred in a film, and had started touring the world: (london '77) (there is a possible live in Australia dbl album released (in aussie)from their aussie tour in '73. I've read announcements in HEY for this but no one I know has ever heard it). Baris' guitar player still lives in Australia.

'On derule glemser does play like beck as in OUSD.DId You mean dreja & mcCarty ? Did you tape the interview with mccarty & co ?'

Glemser was very good and Clancy and Help Yourself were both well-known bands back then... I did mean dreja & mcCarty but didn't tape. I had a nice chat with Dreja before the show and McCarty backstage after but nothing revalatory- just chit chat. Dreja was telling me about how good guitar player ben king was and he's right.

  119. here's one of the 2 links about Solomon moving from US to Turkey; maybe u can find the other. everything else I've ever read or searched over the past 2 hrs said that he grew up in turkey.

my long gone cool live K-scope boot was from Berkeley Folk Festival, July 1967.

just found this: 'Solomon also spent time in Turkey with the US Navy.'

I wonder what the truth of his background is.

I was in touch with David Lindley back in the '80s (I wonder if he'd have a copy of SONGS THE VELVETS TAUGHT US; I use to regulary send him tapes of turkish music; he told me he received lots of tape from people but I was one of the very few who sent him good stuff, which was the real deal.) I think I did an interview with him or at least asked him a bunch of questions over the phone that I wrote down. offhand I remember he was very into 'THE HITTITE SOUND.'

5 or 6 yrs ago, solomon got in touch with me thru david bissette of pulsating dream and asked if I would do him a favor but he never followed up.

just found out they played 4 times in boston and I never got to see them.

  120. I thought that soloman must've had a turkish jewish background too, like bob dylan.i'll try those 2 early kaleidoscope album's you mentioned if i see them for them here. I listened to that uygur guitar hero, the first clip so far,I give him the thumbs up.He must've been listening to koray or it's probably the turkic scales that sound similar when played on a western instrument such as the electric guitar. Also he sounds like omar khorshid a bit too !!!So baris made that glemser/yardbird quote when he was already established, not in the late 60s before he hit it big with daglar daglar. He was probably misquoted then ?.
Baris manco came out to australia in april 1974.he did a gig at the elizabethan theatre in Newtown Sydney and another gig in melbourne.Baris also appeared on a ten minute tv music show called GTK on the Abc government channel here.i think he was interviewed and maybe a clip was shown too? he also visited warragamba dam and the african lion safari(no longer exists) near sydney.I also read that he made a studio recording here that is still unreleased.also he & kurtulan ekspres were featured in a newspaper article in sydney.I don't have any of this stuff. This info is from a baris biography and various sites i've looked up in the past few years.
Another band that has a turkish psych sounding song is the masters' apprentices from australia.there song just because i love you sounds a lot like manco's flower of love.

    yes; traditional uighur folk music.
A turkish friend who's lived in China for 10 years has told me about going to uighur cafes in Beijing that have groups playing electrified folk music that sounds like garage rock/anadolu rock but these klips were the 1st I had a chance to listen to. I once asked

this doesn't ring a bell. I just looked for my WAR OR HANDS OF TIME collection but couldn't find it, which I've had for about 20 yrs. I loved the early Masters (until the guitar player left); after that they didn't do much for me. was it later?
I don't know if its on my CD.

  123. the song is "it's because i love you" by an early 70s line-up of the masters. If you take away the chorus, it's fairly similar to manco's flower of love. This song is a rock anthem here and is used in tv commercials and is played on the radio everyday.I prefer the mick bower line-up of the masters too.
No, I didn't get the O.khorshid dbl lp yet but will get it soon along with the cd when it comes out.
I've heard about that turkic tribe from central asia converting from shamanism to judaism years before most turks converted to the moslem religion.I think many of these people are of the tartar branch of the turkic peoples? I've read somewhere that charles bronson is a jewish tartar ? There are a small number of turkic people that are christian, buddhist, shamanist etc.too but like i said 98% are moslem.

I have no answer for either question

There is a cool bio called THE ORIENTALIST about an azeri jewish novelist of 100 yrs ago who passed as a moslem. lots of info about strange groups of jews from the region with no true relation to jews or to turks.
a few years ago, I asked a kurdish friend about kurdish jews (almost all moved to israel in late '40s; but some have recently started to move back). she was dumbfounded-- had never heard of such a thing. there are a couple of books on the topic but they are small and super expensive as most academic books are.

ok. but how much turk rock made its way to australia? as far as I know, none made it to the US until decades later. I wonder why baris or erkin never played in the US; particularly when u consider that erkin lived in canada for a few years. even feridun hurel played in london occasionally when he lived there in the early '80s. aydin cakus, who played with erkin for a short while (and former bunalim) moved to US in '70s to become a housepainter. for many years he has had very bad hard rock bands. I wonder what nihat orarel (drummer & songwriter for erkin koray super grup)has done since moving to new zealand in '75? (he is currently building a website). I met him once and he told some horrible/hilarious
stories (that for various reasons I shouldn't repeat).

so the tartars gave us charles bronson and... (see below)

except for baris, I didn't know this.I've never heard anything about them or others coming to play in the usa. but back in the '90s, I heard of some cool moroccan groups playing in boston for the local moroccan community but I'd always find out too late. so there must have been others. I was really only tuned into the indian community cause I was studying n.indian music so I got to see sitar and slide guitarists.

'I think mogollar's 1st record recorded in france was a world music hit all around the world for collectors of ethnic music, even though the record was a folk-psych album.'
I started collecting all types of turkish music about 1970 but not until I went to istanbul in '91 to find out for myself, did I hear of them or anyone else.

'I don't know why it took so long for the rest of the world to recognise turkish rock(not including folk/belly dance records).Maybe it was the language barrier or most likely people didn't know that there was such a thing as anadolu/turkish rock'

I don't think its the language barrier cause lots of stuff is now well-liked and most people don't understand from anadolu rock to omar suleyman to guitars of the golden triangle. I think that people just never had the chance to hear this stuff before. when deniz pinar played me all the anadolu rock greats in '91 it blew my mind-- this was the type of music I'd been searching for for 20 years since I'd heard Kaleidoscope.

Also,if you had watched turkish movies in the 70s&80s in the cinemas or later on video you would've heard mogollar, cahit berkay, baris manco, metin alatli, timur selcuk etc used as soundtrack music.I only got into this stuff in the late 90s but i had probably heard a lot of this music in turkish movies without realising who the artists were and what kind of music they were playing.
had to rewrite this message the one before disappeared for some reason??

  132. and now both msgs are here!

I always wondered why no other US band used a saz. I know of one band that used a buzuki (FORUM QUORUM- who I saw on the Mike Douglas tv show). they had a so-so album and an unreleased soundtrack.
in the '60s&'70s there were so many local ethnic music scenes but almost nothing moved over to rock. For ex., in the boston area there were at least 4 or more labels: a turkish label in woburn, greek, armenian, etc. and I know that this was true in many other areas. its like the 1st generation clung to their roots and their children just completely abandoned them. in aussie, did any turk roots music makes its way over to rock or pop.
I just remembered: the only hit single to feature a bouzuki in america: BEND IT by dave dee, dozy beaky, mick and tish (and their only US hit).

  133. there are a few aussie turkish rock bands now but back in the 70s&80s there were mainly musicians who use to perform turkish music at weddings and parties with keyboards, guitars, drums & saz but I wouldn't have called it rock music.I'm not into modern sounds ie post 1970s music,I prefer listening to vintage music.

  134. .......from now in australia there's one called unified gecko but I don't like their music. There's more of those wedding bands and hip hop djs etc. There's probably more.

  136. 'there are a few aussie turkish rock bands'
    are they any good?

'in the 70s&80s there were mainly musicians who use to perform turkish music... with keyboards, guitars, drums & saz but I wouldn't have called it rock music.'

there was trad stuff in '70s turkey that slid into rock-- I use to have a psychedelic bellydance album for example. and there were bands that did both.

'I'm not into modern sounds ie post 1970s music,I prefer listening to vintage music.'
for the most part, that's true for me too.

'those clips by the replikas on v tunnel are blocked.warning dangerous content security risk comes up'

ooh, so dangerous. vtunnel stopped working for me, so I switched to another proxy.

'but I watched the 'cicek dag' clip on you tube it was excellent.almost a note for note copy of koray's version. Was this off a mobile phone movie or with a proper video camera.'
I have no idea. but you should check out more of their videos on youtube-- they're excellent. they've been hinting at doing an anadolu rock covers album for years.
it would be easy cause they have plenty that they do on occasion in concert and do very well.

'might download those uygur guitarist clips and extract the audio and burn them onto a cd to listen to in the car.'

I wish I knew how to do that.
I'd like to make copies of the videos themselves (if I knew how).

  137. for the most part I don't think there is any aussie turkish rock that's any good.you might know deniz tek ?? originally a turkish american who came to australia in the early 70s and formed the ozzie cult band the radio birdmen with rob younger etc etc.i think he hailed from the same place as the stooges, iggy pop & so on.anyway he has done some solo albums with a saz included in the mix.haven't heard any of his solo work but all this was revealed in a turkish newspaper interview with him about 15 years ago.he is also a doctor and was a jet fighter pilot/medic for the us armed forces.sounds far fetched but it's all true.

  138. I definitely know about dennis tek.
an old girlfriend of mine was either friends with him or rob younger. then she married the lead singer of SPK.

it definitely sounds fish. I just tried and for the 1st time I got 'access denied or video not found' but nothing about my comp being fool of viruses. you can try what I do to get around this-- use a proxy such as vtunnel, ktunnel, or youtubeunblock-- there are a number of them.
I just tried youtubeunblock and one of the others and neither worked. at the bottom it said they only block youtube which isn't what they promise.
damn. I've been watching these videos for 4 months.
I wonder if people other than turkey and australia would be blocked?
